Summary
Spider-Man: No Way Home was originally going to include Kraven the Hunter as a villain, but Sony blocked it due to their upcoming solo movie.
In Spider-Man 4, Tom Holland's Peter Parker may face off against the villainous Kraven the Hunter, adding a formidable adversary to his already challenging and lonely journey. Bringing Kraven into the story would bring a classic Spider-Man adventure to life, infused with a darker and more mature atmosphere that aligns with the character's evolution, and fulfilling the desires of fans for an engaging storyline.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, originally intended to introduce a thrilling villain from the comics to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was thwarted by Sony due to their upcoming film. This highly anticipated multiverse event featured Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire reprising their roles as Spider-Man, uniting to combat adversaries from previous Spider-Man franchises. The film incorporated iconic villains such as Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, Sandman, and the Lizard, but Marvel Studios was unable to include their initially intended Spider-Man villain.
According to information from the MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios book (via The Direct), it was revealed that Sony prevented Marvel from utilizing Kraven the Hunter in Spider-Man: No Way Home due to their own plans for the character. The book discloses that the film's writers, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, had proposed Kraven as the primary antagonist, only to discover that he "could not be used until Sony established him in his own movie." Notably, one of the upcoming Marvel movies set within Sony's Spider-Man Universe is Kraven the Hunter, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role. Holland had previously expressed his thoughts on the original intentions for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Please see his complete statement below:
In the past, there had been plans for a Kraven movie to be the third installment. However, due to various complications, the project did not materialize. Jon presented me with this exciting concept for the Kraven movie. However, I prefer not to disclose any details about it, as there is still a possibility of it being developed in the future. The experience was enjoyable.
Kraven The Hunter Would Make Sense For Spider-Man 4
Holland will make a return for at least one more standalone movie, presenting a promising opportunity for Kraven the Hunter to become the primary antagonist in Spider-Man 4. The ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home left Peter Parker, played by Holland, in his most vulnerable state within the MCU. After Green Goblin's cruel act of killing Aunt May and Doctor Strange's spell erasing the memories of Peter from his loved ones, he finds himself completely alone in his journey.
In order to face the upcoming challenges, Peter creates a new Spider-Man suit that signifies a return to his fundamental roots in Spider-Man 4. With limited access to technology and no other familiar superheroes to rely on, Kraven could emerge as a formidable adversary in this installment. The initial trailer for Kraven the Hunter hinted at Taylor-Johnson's portrayal of an unyielding character who is willing to go to extreme measures to achieve his goals. As a seasoned and merciless hunter, Kraven would pose a significant threat to Holland's Peter in Spider-Man 4.
Having Kraven pursue Spider-Man throughout New York would fulfill the long-standing request of fans for an MCU adaptation of this story. This setup would allow Spider-Man 4 to deliver a classic and more mature Spider-Man adventure, aligning with Peter's post-high school phase. Despite Taylor-Johnson's previous role as Quicksilver in the MCU, Sony's decision to hold off on introducing Kraven in Spider-Man: No Way Home opens the possibility for the actor to make a multiverse appearance in the MCU, expanding on the story and conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
