Although the Rick and Morty anime series marks a first for the franchise, it is not the initial venture into anime-style productions. The Samurai & Shogun animated short preceded the series, airing on Toonami and streaming online in March 2020. A sequel to the short was also released in November 2021.

Sola Entertainment is producing the series, with Maki Nagano, Max Nishi, and Takenari Maeda as general producers. The animation producer and assistant producer are credited as Yu Kiyozona and Yuuki Kakizoe, respectively.
Executive producers for the project include Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou, with Arisa Matsuzawa serving as the art director and Mikiko Kojima as the color designer.
