Rick and Morty debuts fresh voices for its lead characters as co-creator and voice actor Justin Roiland leaves the show, promising an exciting new dynamic for Adult Swim's beloved series

The latest season of "Rick and Morty," which debuted on Sunday evening, pleasantly delivered its trademark blend of strangeness that fans have grown accustomed to, including hijinks, clever insider jokes, and a plethora of otherworldly creatures. While the overall content remained consistent, there were two significant changes: the voices of Rick and Morty themselves.

Taking over the roles are Ian Cardoni as Rick and Harry Belden as Morty. They have replaced Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the series who previously voiced both Rick and Morty, in addition to various supporting characters. Roiland's departure from the show in January came after accusations of domestic violence, which have since been dropped.

Adult Swim kept the identities of the new actors under wraps until several minutes into the episode that aired on Sunday. (Both Adult Swim and Cartoon Network fall under the parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, alongside CNN.)

According to the creators of the show, the two actors, who are relatively new to the scene, were chosen after an extensive audition process that involved thousands of voice actors.

The show is still on air, led by co-creator Dan Harmon ("Community," the upcoming animated Fox series "Krapopolis"), and showrunner Scott Marder.

In the season premiere, Rick and his quirky team tried to organize an intervention for a devastated friend struggling with addiction. Making a special appearance, Hugh Jackman played a fictionalized, self-absorbed version of himself.

"Rick and Morty" has been an immensely successful show for Adult Swim since its debut in 2013. With two Emmys under its belt and consistent acclaim as one of the top TV comedies of the 21st century, it has even ventured into collaborations with well-known brands like McDonald's and the popular video game "Fortnite." The show's success led Adult Swim to renew it for an impressive 70 additional episodes in 2018, extending the show into its seventh season.
