A Brief History of Asylum Mockbusters
The Exorcist: Believer introduces a different twist by involving two children who are possessed, whereas The Exorcists takes a different approach by featuring three exorcists who conduct a continuous ritual on a girl possessed by a malevolent entity. As the possession spreads, the task of performing the exorcism becomes increasingly challenging for the trio gathered to save her.The Asylum is renowned for its unique contributions to two genres: the Sharknado franchise and the Syfy show Z Nation. However, the majority of their production constitutes mockbuster movies, which are typically made on a budget of less than $1 million and are intended to coincide with major theatrical releases. The company commenced their movie releases in 1999, primarily focusing on independent horror films, but it was in 2005 that they truly hit their stride with H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds, a companion piece to Steven Spielberg's acclaimed sci-fi blockbuster War of the Worlds, featuring Tom Cruise.
In 2005, The Asylum released two more imitation movies - King of the Lost World, a spoof of King Kong, and Legion of the Dead, a zombie flick that coincided with George A. Romero's Land of the Dead. As time passed, a growing percentage of their productions consisted of these mockbuster titles, such as Transmorphers, Sunday School Musical, Paranormal Entity, and Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies.
Even though The Exorcists stands out as one of their recent notable releases, the company has continued to release mockbusters. In 2023 alone, they have already distributed six titles, including Methgator, a parody of Cocaine Bear, and Transmorphers: Mech Beasts, a sequel that complements the well-known Transformers: Rise of the Beasts spinoff. The inclusion of horror legend Doug Bradley, known for his role in Hellraiser, adds further prestige to this particular film.
