Captain America: Brave New World has recently wrapped up its filming after a successful production period of over three months. This highly anticipated installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues the story from the popular Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with Anthony Mackie's character, Sam Wilson, fully embracing the mantle of Captain America. Joining Mackie are several new and familiar faces from the MCU, including Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns, and Harrison Ford taking over the role previously played by the late William Hurt, Thunderbolt Ross.
Sharing the exciting news, cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau took to his Instagram story. He posted a picture of one of the clapperboards from the set of Captain America: Brave New World with the caption "Wrap", confirming the completion of filming. This announcement came just in time, as it was revealed that the actors in SAG-AFTRA were on the verge of going on strike. Take a look at Morgenthau's post below:
Why Actors May Now Strike Alongside Writers
Rumors started circulating in late June about a potential strike by actors when SAG-AFTRA, the main labor union for the entertainment industry's actors, was reaching the end of its current contract with all major studios. This required them to renegotiate their agreements. The guild even went so far as to vote for a strike if the deal didn't go through by June 30. A letter advocating for the strike, signed by more than 1,000 members, including Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Mark Ruffalo, further fueled the speculation.
Similar to the ongoing Writer's Guild of America strike, the potential SAG-AFTRA strike arises from actors' concerns about receiving residuals based on viewership data from streaming platforms and establishing a standardized method for measuring such data. Performers are also expressing other concerns, such as the use of artificial intelligence to replicate an actor's appearance, fair compensation across various productions, and adjustments to the rules surrounding self-tape auditions for greater fairness. Currently, SAG-AFTRA has not made a decision. However, many studios have already withdrawn from San Diego Comic-Con, except for Lionsgate, indicating their preparation for a potential strike. Captain America: Brave New World, which is highly anticipated in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would have been a major highlight at the convention. Although fans may have to wait longer for a sneak peek, the fact that filming has been completed signifies a promising chance for its release in July 2024.
