id Software, the studio behind the highly praised Doom games, is hiring for a new first-person game after the success of Doom Eternal.
Fans are eagerly speculating about the potential of the next game, considering possibilities such as a Quake reboot or the introduction of a new IP. The job posting alludes to the incorporation of vehicles, which could suggest either a new Rage installment or an entirely different franchise.
The game development studio responsible for the successful 2016 Doom reboot and its critically acclaimed sequel, id Software, is currently seeking to hire talent for their next first-person game. It has been more than three years since id Software released their latest title, Doom Eternal, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews and recognition. Doom Eternal was even nominated for Game of the Year at the 2020 Game Awards and is widely regarded as one of the greatest first-person shooter games ever made.
Since the release of Doom Eternal's final DLC, The Ancient Gods Part 2, in 2021, fans have been speculating about id Software's upcoming projects. With The Ancient Gods concluding the Doom Slayer's story and fellow Bethesda studio MachineGames successfully handling the Wolfenstein franchise, fans have been suggesting that id Software might explore Quake or even Rage as their next ventures. Considering the relatively lesser appreciation for the Rage franchise, a potential Quake reboot has emerged as a popular choice, especially considering the recent impressive remaster of Quake 2.
The enigma shrouding id Software's upcoming title may soon unravel, as a recent job posting sheds light on the probable genre of the game. On LinkedIn, id Software shared a job opening for a Senior Weapons and Prop Artist. Notably, the position requires candidates to have prior experience working on and releasing at least one first-person game. It is somewhat perplexing why id Software is recruiting for this role at such a late stage. Unless faced with significant setbacks, and following the customary development timelines of AAA games, the studio would have commenced production on their next project right after the launch of Doom Eternal three years ago, or after the release of The Ancient Gods Part 2 DLC in 2021.
Vehicles are mentioned in id Software's job post, which is interesting because Rage is the only franchise by id Software that includes vehicles. However, it seems unlikely that id Software would add vehicles to Doom or a potential Quake reboot, as these franchises have historically focused on player movement and extensive first-person arsenals. This leaves potential options for either Rage 3 or a completely new IP. Considering the mixed reception of Rage 2 in 2019, it's hard to imagine the acclaimed studio revisiting the Mad Max-inspired apocalyptic shooter.
Additionally, since the job post mentions a team "making AAA games," it's possible that id Software could be working on multiple games with different internal teams. However, this is purely speculative as no official confirmation has been provided by id Software, Bethesda, or Xbox so far. Fans will have to wait longer to find out more details about the studio's new FPS title. It's possible that id Software will be ready to unveil their new project next year, as it will mark four years since the release of Doom Eternal.
