Aquaman 2's release date remains unchanged despite other blockbusters being delayed, showing a lack of support and instilling little confidence.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the final installment of the DCEU, may have been disregarded by the new DCU team in order to prioritize other interconnected endeavors.
While numerous projects have been brought to a standstill due to the ongoing strikes led by the Writers Guild of America, Aquaman 2 remains unaffected; however, actors are currently prohibited from promoting it.
Aquaman 2's release date remains unchanged, even though Warner Bros. has delayed two major blockbusters. Building on the success of the 2018 DCEU film Aquaman, which introduced the origin story of the beloved DC Comics hero, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom emerged as an idea proposed by franchise star Jason Momoa and backed by director James Wan. Although specific details about the plot written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick are currently limited, it revolves around the titular hero's urgent mission to protect the world from the havoc caused by an ancient weapon.
While initial assumptions pointed towards potential delays for the releases of Dune 2 and Aquaman 2, the DC film has managed to evade any negative implications. The decision to postpone Dune 2, a highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 live-action adaptation, was made by Warner Bros. Discovery, subsequently triggering a series of events that impacted projects such as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim, resulting in their release dates being brought forward. Notably, among the roster of movies facing delays, Aquaman 2, starring Momoa, stands absent.
Aquaman 2's original release date was postponed to 2023, causing concern among fans that further delays could occur due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, which began 115 days ago and was joined by the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in July. Both guilds have similar grievances, including issues of fair pay under streaming models and the perceived threat of AI. As a result of the strikes, numerous projects have been put on hold, leading to Warner Bros.' recent decision.
Although Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is not affected by the strikes, the actors are bound by a gag order from the union, preventing them from promoting their projects. Some argue that the decision to keep the original release date for the Aquaman sequel indicates a lack of support or concern from executives, reinforcing the belief that Aquaman 2 is being set up for failure. Recent DC films, which are remnants of the Zack Snyder era, have all been unsuccessful, eroding confidence in an imminent release.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, scheduled to be released theatrically on December 20, 2023, may have been abandoned by James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU team. This potential last film in the DCEU has hinted that it will be separate from other DC projects, as the director implied that Aquaman 2 will not be a part of the interconnected upcoming projects that will establish the new status quo under Gunn and Safran.
