Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director, James Mangold, recently shared insights into the scrapped plans for the Indiana Jones franchise spinoff series on Disney+. The series, which was announced in November 2022, would have been the second television show in the Indiana Jones world after The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles from the 1990s. However, it was reported in March of this year that Lucasfilm had abandoned the project and refocused on the Star Wars franchise. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Mangold discussed his involvement in the development of the series, revealing that he had reviewed the plans but acknowledged that they were purely speculative. He also confirmed earlier reports that the series would not have featured the character of Indiana Jones.

Upon the release of the news regarding the Indiana Jones Disney+ series, there was much speculation surrounding its direction. Although it was evident that Harrison Ford would not directly partake in the project, as he had made it unmistakable that his portrayal in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would be his final time donning the character's iconic fedora, most theories proposed that the show would serve as a potential prequel, with Indy's unseen mentor, Abner Ravenwood, taking on the role of the new series lead.

Abner Ravenwood, an Egyptologist and archaeologist, was first introduced in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. He taught Indy during his time at the University of Chicago and was the father of Marion Ravenwood. Some fans even speculate that Abner may have been the graverobber who gave Indy his iconic hat in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

A prequel TV series centered around Abner Ravenwood would have been an exciting expansion of the franchise. However, it appears that audiences will not have the opportunity to see such a series. The future of the Indiana Jones world remains uncertain, with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny potentially serving as the final installment.
