Misha Collins, who portrayed the angel Castiel in Supernatural, shared his reaction to the cancellation of The Winchesters, which signals the official end of the Supernatural franchise. Initially introduced as a guest character to incorporate Christian theology into the series, Castiel's popularity led to an expanded role throughout the show. Although Collins never appeared in The Winchesters season 1, he had previously expressed his desire to make a cameo before the show's cancellation in May 2023.
In an interview with Deadline, Collins discussed his feelings about the spinoff's demise and its implications for the franchise. Referring to the news as merely sad, rather than bittersweet, he expressed his deep affection for the franchise and its significant impact on his career. Collins also expressed his continued hope for a future revival or movie.
While cleaning out my garage, I discovered an astonishing amount of boxes containing various items. Amongst them were about 60 or 70 Supernatural t-shirts and numerous copies of Entertainment Weekly magazines featuring us on the cover. It dawned on me that I should donate all these belongings to Goodwill, as it symbolized the end of a significant chapter in my life. Initially, I thought this transition would be bittersweet, but upon reflection, it is simply a melancholic moment. I cannot discern any sweetness in it.
However, we must move forward and embrace new and exciting projects in our lives. Nevertheless, Supernatural will always hold a special place in my heart. It not only played a monumental role in my life but also brought about substantial transformative changes. I still maintain a glimmer of hope that, someday, we could revive the show in some capacity. Perhaps through a movie or a limited-run series, we could bid farewell to the beloved characters one last time.
What Are The Chances Of A Supernatural Revival?
After a remarkable 15-season run of the original flagship series, there was anticipation that The Winchesters would carry on the Supernatural franchise for many more years. Just like the creator Eric Kripke's initial vision for Supernatural, showrunner Robbie Thompson had devised a five-season storyline for the spinoff series. Regrettably, these plans have now been abandoned following unsuccessful attempts to find a new network for the show.
With any hopes for a continuation of The Winchesters seemingly extinguished, numerous Supernatural fans are expressing their desire for a potential return to the main series. Although it has been less than three years since the finale of season 15, where Jensen Ackles' character Dean found peace in the afterlife, even the actor himself has alluded to the possibility of a 10-episode revival series of Supernatural in the future. Given the cast's willingness to come back and the fervent demands of the audience, it is highly probable that a Supernatural revival will happen at some point.
However, audiences may have to be patient and wait longer before a series revival takes place. Although revivals, reboots, and sequel series are popular strategies for studios to capitalize on successful franchises, the hiatus between shows can often last several years or even decades. Considering the cancellation of The Winchesters and Supernatural's recent conclusion, it may still be premature to anticipate a revival in the near future.
