Last Thursday, Studio 4℃'s official Twitter page unveiled numerous exciting updates about the upcoming Disney+ anime Phoenix: Eden17. These updates encompassed the anime's official Japanese title, its release date, a captivating teaser trailer, an eye-catching promotional poster, informative cast and staff lists, and an unexpected surprise announcement regarding a forthcoming film adaptation of the anime. These revelations marked the first time that many of these details had surfaced, serving to intensify anticipation for the anime ahead of its premiere.
Phoenix: Eden17 is an anime adaptation of the revered manga Phoenix by the late Osamu Tezuka, widely regarded as the "Grandfather of Manga." Throughout his illustrious career, Tezuka made notable contributions to the manga world, crafting influential titles such as Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, and Black Jack. Phoenix stands as one of his most remarkable works; however, the tragic demise of Tezuka resulted in the incomplete conclusion of the series.
The original Phoenix manga, considered Tezuka's "life's work," was published from 1954 to 1988 until his passing. Interestingly, each book in the series tells a self-contained story set in different eras and timelines. Phoenix: Eden17 draws inspiration from the manga and is not the first anime adaptation. Other short anime series, anime films, and live-action films have been created as well.
In Phoenix: Eden17, the focus is on the "Nostalgia" story from the manga. This science fiction tale is set in a future where a girl named Romi flees a devastated Earth for the planet Eden17. However, upon her arrival, she discovers that Eden17 has also experienced a catastrophic event and life there is even more challenging than on Earth. Romi tragically loses her partner, George, while being pregnant with their child. Despite her attempts to have more descendants, she only gives birth to boys. Despite being the queen of Eden17, Romi yearns to return to Earth.
Phoenix: Eden17 is set to make its premiere on Disney+ worldwide (excluding mainland China) on September 13th, 2023. Alongside the anime series, fans can also look forward to the release of Phoenix: Reminiscence of Flower in Japanese cinemas on November 3rd. Unlike most anime movies, Reminiscence of Flower will feature a unique ending that sets it apart from the regular series, making it a must-watch for fans.
The recently unveiled cast list includes Honoka Yoshida as Com, Yosuke Kubozuka as George, Rie Miyazawa as Romi, and Issey Ogata as Sudarban. While they may have relatively limited previous works to their names, Phoenix: Eden17 has the potential to catapult them to fame if the series performs well. Leading the team is director Shoujirou Nishimi (known for Mutafukaz), with Shinji Kimura (of Children of the Sea fame) serving as the art director, and Tatsuzou Nishida (also from Children of the Sea) as the character designer.
More anime series are now being added to Disney+ instead of airing on Japanese TV. This allows for a greater variety of stories to be brought to viewers, and they are no longer restricted to traditional release schedules, as seen with the non-traditional September start of Phoenix: Eden17. Despite being a significant manga by Tezuka, previous adaptations of Phoenix did not achieve much recognition or success. Whether Phoenix: Eden17 will fare better with its new streaming format remains to be seen. Look out for its release on Disney+ on September 13, 2023.
