Jess Bush on Nurse Chapel & Spock Confronting Their Feelings in Strange New Worlds Season 2
Screen Rant had the delightful opportunity to interview Jess Bush regarding Chapel's long-awaited confession of love to Spock, her insightful words for the couple, Ethan Peck's comedic talent, and Bush's recent trip to NASA.Screen Rant: In a recent outreach, I wanted to express that Strange New Worlds season 2 surpasses all expectations as it delves into the realms of endless affection, heart-wrenching emotions, and unparalleled romanticism, making it the most enthralling Star Trek installment I've ever witnessed. Personally, I am utterly captivated by it. What are your sentiments regarding this?
Jess Bush: Season 2 was an absolute delight to shoot. The writers and showrunners took what we already knew worked and elevated it to a whole new level. They really embraced our abilities as performers and pushed the boundaries of the show. It was a thoroughly challenging yet rewarding experience, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of it.
In this episode, Spock and Chapel's relationship takes a significant turn. Their feelings for each other are complex and hard to articulate throughout the course of the episode. So, I'll pose the question - do you believe Spock and Chapel are in love?
Jess Bush: I believe they're making progress in that direction. This particular episode has compelled both of them to confront their true emotions and likely gain more clarity within themselves. It may not necessarily be for others, but the possibility of losing Spock or him changing has prompted Chapel to be more honest about her feelings. Definitely. Their emotions are evolving and becoming more defined, but who can say what lies ahead for them?
If you, Jess, had the chance to sit with both of them in a bar and they sought your advice, what advice would you offer Chapel and Spock?
Jess Bush expresses her thoughts on what advice she would give to the characters Chapel and Spock in the show. Additionally, the speaker compliments Jess on her portrayal of a younger Nurse Chapel and how well she portrays the character's development and growth.
Jess Bush: Thank you.
How do you feel about how she's progressing so far?
I believe this season has posed a significant challenge for Chapel. It has truly pushed her out of her comfort zone, leading to remarkable emotional growth. She has been compelled to be more forthcoming and honest about her feelings, seeking assistance from Uhura and Ortegas, which is uncharacteristic of her. Moreover, she has opened up to a complete stranger, expressing her needs and desires. This newfound transparency showcases a side of Chapel that she previously kept concealed, highlighting her journey towards greater openness and authenticity.
I am grateful that you brought up the shuttle mission with Chapel, Uhura, and Ortegas because it was an amazing experience. It was actually the first time the three of us were together, which made it even more enjoyable. Shooting the interdimensional space sequence was a major highlight. Despite the fun, it was also quite challenging because we filmed using the AR wall. The set itself was completely devoid of edges or solid objects, creating a swirling, colorful abyss. It looked incredible, but being inside it for 16 straight hours was physically demanding. We couldn't see where we were supposed to stand when the camera moved, and we all felt nauseous and on the verge of passing out. It was a surreal challenge. However, I absolutely adore working with Celia and Melissa. We have a great bond and a lot of fun together on set. Although our chemistry may be different off-set, we genuinely care for each other and make the most of our time together.
Chapel's inability to state the obvious and the subsequent interaction between her and the others, urging her to do so, was a moment that I particularly adored. It was a beautiful sight to witness her asserting herself by making them both turn around.
Jess Bush: Yeah, she tends to be somewhat delicate and timid when it comes to [it].
Ethan's performance in this episode was a comedic masterpiece. He skillfully portrayed a teenage version of Spock, showcasing his talent and versatility. Considering how well you know Ethan, do you believe that this portrayal was reflective of his teenage self? Could he have drawn inspiration from his own personal experiences?
Jess Bush: Definitely! I can confidently say that Ethan possesses a delightful, innocent charm and a genuine sense of curiosity outside of his professional life. Watching this aspect of his personality shine through on screen was a truly delightful and joyful experience.
I am a big fan of yours on Instagram. Your adventures are really fascinating. I am quite jealous that you recently visited NASA. Can you share some details about that experience?
Jess Bush: Visiting NASA was by far the most amazing thing I have ever done. Last year, I had the opportunity to collaborate with NASA and was invited to witness a rocket launch. It was a dream come true for me. Being there completely changed my perspective and I was eager to connect with the brilliant minds at NASA. So, we organized a trip to visit them. Additionally, I had the honor of speaking on a panel about the influence of science fiction on the space industry, advancements in space travel, and how space exploration impacts me as an artist. It was an incredibly rewarding conversation.
I had the opportunity to speak with Mike Gould, the architect of the Artemis accords, who provided valuable insights. Additionally, I had the privilege of engaging in conversation with Morgan Gendel, renowned for his work on "The Inner Light" and other notable episodes of [Star Trek]. Another insightful individual I interacted with was A.C. Charania, the Chief Technologist at NASA. This experience was truly surreal, being able to engage with such remarkable individuals. Meeting people who are directly involved in the real-life manifestation of the stories we tell was a pinch me moment. I must say, the space community is filled with incredible individuals. Their unwavering dedication to something greater than themselves and their contagious optimism resonated with every person I encountered during the trip. It was undeniably a profoundly inspiring experience.
