Summary
Frasier reboot creators address the possibility of Cheers cameos in the new iteration, as the show returns to Boston.
The creators are reluctant to heavily rely on previous characters, but they are eager to have Norm and Sam make cameo appearances. Frasier has a track record of bringing back characters from Cheers, such as Sam, Woody, Diane, Carla, Norm, and Cliff. In the reboot, Bebe Neuwirth will be reprising her role as Lilith.
Frasier reboot creators Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli discuss the potential for Cheers cameos. Premiering on October 12 on Paramount+, the new version of Frasier brings back Kelsey Grammer's renowned psychiatrist Frasier Crane, who was initially introduced 40 years ago in season 3 of Cheers. After Cheers ended in 1993, Frasier Crane received his own successful spin-off. Given that the Frasier reboot returns to the setting of Cheers in Boston, there is a chance for some appearances from the original sitcom.
In an interview with Variety to mark the release of the Frasier reboot on Paramount+, Harris and Cristalli acknowledge the possibility of Cheers cameos in the revival. However, they express caution about delving too deeply into the past, although Cristalli admits his personal desire to see Norm and Sam make an appearance. Please find their complete statements below:
Harris expresses awareness of the need to avoid appearing desperate by simply including elements from the past in their show to elicit cheers or viewership. Frasier harbors conflicting emotions regarding his return to Boston, primarily driven by his commitment to his son, as well as the unfinished matters awaiting him there. Cristalli explains that Frasier's intentional avoidance of mentioning or revisiting Boston stems from a lack of readiness, as he departed the city with a sense of defeat. However, Cristalli hopes that Frasier will eventually reach a place where he can confront his past, expressing enthusiasm at the prospect of witnessing reunions between Frasier and beloved characters, such as Norm and Sam.
Harris: He may require some time to feel comfortable and gather the confidence to step foot in that bar once more. Additionally, we appreciate the notion of prolonging the anticipation. When or if he decides to return to Cheers, it will undoubtedly be a significant milestone. Our utmost priority is to execute it properly and accord it the attention it deserves.
Every Cheers Character Who Returned In Frasier
The television series Frasier, which aired from 1993 to 2004, is known for its frequent appearances of characters from Cheers, the show it originated from. In the second season of Frasier, Sam (played by Ted Danson), the owner of the bar in Cheers, seeks advice from the titular psychiatrist regarding his new fiancée, Sheila (portrayed by Téa Leoni). In the fourth season, Woody (played by Woody Harrelson), a bartender from Cheers, returns to realize that he and the psychiatrist have little in common outside of the bar. Additionally, Diane (portrayed by Shelley Long), a former waitress and Frasier's ex-fiancée, reappears in the sixth season while facing a potential breakdown and dealing with the failure of her play.
Most of the cast of Cheers, including Carla (Rhea Perlman), Norm (George Wendt), and Cliff (John Ratzenberger), made appearances in season 9 of Frasier. This season saw the psychiatrist returning to Boston to celebrate Cliff's retirement, resulting in a quasi-reunion of the Cheers cast. However, one notable absence was Kirstie Alley, who played the bar manager Rebecca in Cheers but did not reprise her role in Frasier. On the other hand, the upcoming reboot will see the return of Bebe Neuwirth as Lilith, Frasier's ex-wife and Freddy's mother, who appeared in both Cheers and Frasier. As for other possible cameos in the future, no decisions have been made yet.
