According to a well-known industry insider, Shin Megami Tensei 5, the highly acclaimed game from Atlus, is set to expand to multiple platforms. Originally released exclusively for the Switch in 2021, the game received positive reviews but was plagued by performance issues that left some fans calling for a version optimized for more powerful systems.
In the past, Atlus has employed a somewhat unpredictable platform strategy, alternating between Sony and Nintendo exclusives within a single series such as Persona. However, since being acquired by Sega in 2013, the studio has shifted its focus to porting older titles to additional platforms. Recently, with the launch of Soul Hackers 2, Atlus even set a precedent for day-one multiplatform releases. Shin Megami Tensei 5 remains the only game launched by the studio in the last five years that remains exclusive to a single platform.
According to NWeedle, a well-known Spanish leaker, Shin Megami Tensei 5 will no longer remain a Switch exclusive for much longer. While the leaker did not provide any further details, rumors of an SMT5 port have surfaced online before. In November 2021, a dataminer discovered evidence of PC and PS4 ports of the game in its files. Additionally, a Nvidia GeForce Now leak two months prior also referenced a PC version of the game. This latest report aligns with a mid-March rumor that Xbox Game Pass will be adding four more Atlus games, including SMT5. Although the anonymous source who shared this rumor wrongly stated that the PC and Xbox ports of SMT5 would be announced in early May, the credibility of this newly emerged report is strengthened by NWeedle's reputation for accurate leaks. In fact, NWeedle was the first to report on the Switch revival of Metroid Dread over a year before its official announcement in mid-2021.
According to recent leaks, MercurySteam plans to release a 2D Metroid game in 2025 and a sequel to Ori and the Will of the Wisps is currently in development. However, the rumor that Shin Megami Tensei 5 will soon be available on multiple platforms may soon be confirmed. Considering the information that has recently surfaced and previous reports, it's possible that Atlus will announce the first SMT5 ports as early as this week, with the Xbox Games Showcase taking place on June 11th. It's worth noting that Shin Megami Tensei 5 is currently only available on Nintendo Switch.
