Highlights
Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo may be releasing a new manga soon, according to a recent hint on his official Twitter account.
Otomo has been teasing a new manga since 2012; however, he has been struggling with writer's block, making it difficult to complete the project.
Since the original Akira manga concluded more than thirty years ago, fans have been eagerly anticipating a new full-length story from Otomo.
Akira, an influential anime film, not only defined the genre in Japan but also gained international recognition. Originally based on a manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira has become a classic. Despite its success, Otomo continues to write new stories and recently hinted at the possibility of a forthcoming masterpiece.
Otomo's official X (formerly known as Twitter) account made the announcement. The post featured a simple image showing a small portion of a whiteboard covered with drawings and text. Focusing on a sketch of Kiyoko, a character with psychic abilities from Akira, the image caption reads, "I dreamt that Otomo-sensei had drawn a new manga."
The exciting part is the caption on the Tweet, which simply says, "Kiyoko's prophetic dream will come true." This strongly suggests that Otomo may be releasing something new in the future, rather than just sharing a humorous drawing that reflects the desires of many fans. Although the announcement is not officially confirmed, many fans are interpreting it as such.
For years, Katsuhiro Otomo has been teasing the release of a new manga, dating back to 2012. At that time, he announced that he was working on his first major series since Akira, but unfortunately, the manga never materialized. There was no further news until 2018, when Otomo mentioned in an interview that he was still working on a new full-length manga. However, he admitted to experiencing writer's block, which hindered its completion.
Since then, the talented mangaka has remained silent regarding new work, leaving us wondering. The original Akira manga was published from 1982 to 1990, meaning it's been over thirty years since Otomo released any new full-length stories. Instead, he has been sharing short stories and other artistic works. Now, at 69 years old, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of his next series, hoping it arrives sooner rather than later.
Could this be the mysterious manga project Otomo hinted at in 2018? Or is it the long-awaited project from 2012 that never saw the light of day? At present, we can only make guesses about what Katsuhiro Otomo has in store. However, his recent Tweet suggests that something is on the horizon. The question remains: will it be able to live up to the lasting impact of Akira, more than thirty years later?
Akira is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
