A volcanic eruption has commenced on Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, as confirmed by the Icelandic Meteorological Office in a statement released on Monday

There is currently an eruption happening at a volcano on Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, as reported by the Icelandic Meteorological Office on Monday. The eruption started at approximately 10 p.m. local time, following an earthquake at around 9 p.m.

According to the meteorological office, webcams have captured the eruption, which seems to be situated near Hagafell, approximately 3 kilometers north of the town of Grindavík. The office also stated that a Coast Guard helicopter will be dispatched soon to determine the precise location and scale of the eruption.

Earlier this year, residents from Grindavík and nearby settlements were evacuated from their homes as the threat of a volcanic eruption loomed.
