Since his arrival at Manchester City in June 2022, Erling Haaland has consistently scored goals and set new records. During the match against Liverpool on Saturday, the striker further solidified his place in history by scoring his 50th league goal for the current Premier League champion. Haaland achieved this milestone in just 48 games, making him the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 50 goals. The previous record was held by Andrew Cole, who took 65 games to reach this achievement while playing for Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Haaland's goal in the 27th minute secured a lead for host City, which they held until the 80th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the equalizer for Liverpool.
"We played exceptionally well, it was an excellent performance," said City manager Pep Guardiola in an interview with BBC Sport. "I have no complaints or regrets, I am incredibly proud of the team."
Haaland cleverly exploited the gap between Liverpool's center backs and confidently scored a powerful shot into the bottom-right corner, bypassing goalkeeper Allison Becker. This pivotal moment occurred while Liverpool was dominating the game.
However, the match didn't live up to the high standards set by previous encounters between these two dominant teams. Both teams were not performing at their peak.
City thought they had increased their lead when Rúben Dias scored, but the goal was disallowed due to a goalline foul on Alisson by Manuel Akanji. With 10 minutes left, right-back Alexander-Arnold scored a goal in the far corner, courtesy of a pass from Mohamed Salah, earning Liverpool a well-deserved point.
"This is a very difficult place to visit, and it's no coincidence that they have won so many games in a row at home. They are an exceptional team," Klopp told BBC Sport.
"Can we improve our performance? Absolutely, and we will... It's a valuable point for us, and I'm completely satisfied."
City remains at the top of the league table, leading the Reds by a single point. However, their perfect home record for 2023, which included 23 consecutive wins, has now come to an end. If third-placed Arsenal secures a victory against Brentford on Saturday, they could potentially take the top spot.
