The latest trailer for the upcoming Ahsoka show hints at a significant shift in Star Wars Rebels, specifically focusing on the characters Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger. Since the announcement of the Ahsoka series, many have speculated that it will serve as the fifth season of Star Wars Rebels. This notion was reinforced by Dave Filoni himself, especially considering the crucial roles of Sabine, Ezra, Hera Syndulla, and Grand Admiral Thrawn in the show.
Now that the new Ahsoka trailer has been unveiled, it sheds more light on the upcoming Star Wars adventure. Alongside the titular character, the trailer highlights Sabine Wren as a prominent figure and suggests she may serve as the secondary protagonist of the show. Based on the glimpses provided in the Ahsoka trailer, it appears that the series will introduce significant plot revisions to Star Wars Rebels, particularly involving the character Ezra Bridger.
Ezra Bridger's Message In Ahsoka Is Very Different To Rebels
At the end of Star Wars Rebels season 4, Ezra utilizes the Force to trap Grand Admiral Thrawn in the clutches of the Purrgil, resulting in both individuals becoming stranded in the Unknown Regions. Before the Purrgil make the jump to hyperspace, Ezra conveys a concise message to his fellow Rebels. He declares that he must bring his battle with Thrawn to its conclusion, leaving the responsibility of continuing the fight against the Empire in the hands of his team. As the Purgill enter lightspeed, Ezra concludes with the statement, "And remember, the Force will be with you, always."
However, in the official trailer for the show Ahsoka, it appears that one of Ezra's messages differs when it reaches Sabine. In the trailer, Sabine plays a hologram of Ezra in which the Padawan remarks, "As a Jedi, there are times when you must make decisions that others cannot. But I am relying on you to see this through." This suggests that Ezra left a personalized message for Sabine before departing with another character featured in the Ahsoka trailer: Grand Admiral Thrawn. The line expressing his reliance on Sabine to see things through connects to his earlier message to the Rebels crew, emphasizing that it is now their responsibility to carry on in his absence.
This means that each member of the Rebels crew likely received a more personalized message from Ezra, as he alone knew about the Purrgil's involvement in Star Wars Rebels season 4. This significantly alters the significance of Ezra's final message, particularly in relation to Sabine's character development. Additionally, the Ahsoka trailer suggests that Sabine from Star Wars possesses the Force.
Sabine Definitely Wasn't Force-Sensitive In Star Wars Rebels
This is where the potential Star Wars Rebels retcon arises, as it was clearly emphasized in the animated series that Sabine lacked Force abilities. This fact was primarily established in season 3, episode 15, "Trials of the Darksaber". In this episode, Sabine comes into possession of the famous Darksaber - the black Mandalorian lightsaber wielded by Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian season 3. Consequently, she undergoes training from the Jedi Kanan Jarrus.
In the episode, it is repeatedly highlighted that Kanan unknowingly trained Sabine differently from Ezra due to her lack of Force abilities. Sabine was given special Mandalorian gadgets by Fenn Rau to mimic the powers of the Jedi, such as an air blaster and a whip-like tool resembling a Force pull. Star Wars Rebels emphasized Sabine's lack of Force power.
However, the Ahsoka trailer suggests a retcon is taking place. Ezra's message to Sabine implies that he had been training her in the ways of the Jedi. Additionally, Sabine refers to Ahsoka as "master" in the trailer, hinting that Ahsoka started training Sabine similar to Ezra. These hints indicate that Ahsoka is introducing the idea of Sabine developing Force abilities, which further shapes their relationship in the series.
Ahsoka's Relationship With Sabine Mirrors Baylan & Shin
The implication is that Ahsoka and Sabine's relationship reflects that of Baylan and Shin, two villains Ahsoka encountered. In the Ahsoka trailer, it was revealed that Baylan doesn't see himself as a Jedi, which parallels Ahsoka's own statement to Darth Vader. This establishes a connection between Baylan and Ahsoka, as they are both former Jedi who suffered under the Order and rejected their Jedi identities.
With the suggestion of Sabine's possible Force-sensitivity, it is possible that Shin and Sabine are also mirror images of each other. Baylan is clearly training Shin in the ways of the dark side, grooming him as his successor. Similarly, Ahsoka is mentoring Sabine, as indicated by her title of "master". Therefore, if the theories about Sabine's Force-sensitivity from the new trailer are confirmed, the light-sided Force-sensitive duo of Ahsoka and Sabine could serve as a counterbalance to the villainous duo of Baylan and Shin in Ahsoka's story.
What Does It Mean If Sabine Is Force-Sensitive?
The question arises of how Ahsoka and the Star Wars universe would be affected if Sabine were Force-sensitive. The significance of this revelation lies in its connection to the historical conflict between the Mandalorians and the Jedi, with Tarre Vizsla being the only known Mandalorian Jedi. As portrayed in Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian, Tarre Vizsla, the creator of the Darksaber, was a crucial figure. If Sabine also possesses Mandalorian Jedi abilities, it could be a significant development.
Furthermore, Sabine's Force sensitivity would introduce another formidable opponent against Thrawn. Alongside Ahsoka, the New Republic, Ezra, and potentially Luke Skywalker, Sabine would join a formidable group of heroes with Force abilities who resist Thrawn's influence. Additionally, Sabine's connection to The Mandalorian could serve to deepen her character arc and create ties between her and Ahsoka's storyline. Similar to Grogu's struggle with his dual identity as a Mandalorian and Jedi, Sabine may face a similar conflict. Not only does this present an intriguing character development, but it also establishes a connection between Ahsoka and The Mandalorian, setting the stage for their eventual convergence in Filoni's upcoming Star Wars movie.
