Emily Hampshire has issued an apology on her Instagram account for her Halloween costume, where she and a friend dressed up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The "Schitts Creek" actress expressed remorse for portraying a couple who were embroiled in a trial focused on accusations of domestic abuse.
"I deeply regret and apologize for one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant actions I have ever committed," stated Hampshire. "I foolishly believed it would be amusing to dress up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard for Halloween. I am truly sorry and feel immense shame for spreading something so terrible into the world."
"I understand that domestic abuse is a serious matter that should never be taken lightly," she expressed. "These are genuine problems affecting real individuals, and I profoundly regret my behavior. Moving forward, I will strive to improve myself. I offer my sincerest apologies."
The photos were removed following criticism, but TMZ released them.
They depict Hampshire with sleeked-back hair, mimicking Depp's appearance, while her companion portrayed Heard. They had various props, including a wine bottle and imitation excrement, the latter referencing the trial testimony regarding Depp discovering feces in their bed.
