Elizabeth Hurley has dedicated 28 years to raising awareness for breast cancer, and her efforts continue. In an exclusive interview with We, Hurley emphasized the importance of self-familiarization with one's own breasts. She urged individuals to promptly address any abnormalities they notice and stressed the significance of annual screenings as a crucial aspect of overall health maintenance.
The actress proceeded to discuss additional preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and practicing mindfulness.
She emphasized the significance of reducing stress, stating that research has shown a correlation between high levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and an increased risk of cancer. Therefore, she stressed the importance of relaxation and self-care, acknowledging that it can be challenging for women who are often taking care of others.
Still, Hurley is encouraging women to become advocates for breast cancer awareness.
"Ensure that your friends, family members, mothers, and grandmothers are regularly attending screenings and remind them to perform self-checks," she informed Us. "Breast cancer does not discriminate and can affect anyone. Certain groups, such as Black women, are more susceptible to a specific form of breast cancer known as triple negative. This disease requires special attention and a diverse approach in order to effectively combat it."
Hurley's personal connection to breast cancer, having lost her grandmother nearly three decades ago, motivated her to join the Estée Lauder Companies' program. She has been involved for 28 years, ever since Evelyn Lauder, Estée Lauder's daughter-in-law, asked her to participate. The program has successfully raised $118 million, with $93 million dedicated to research. The remaining funds have been allocated to education, medical services, support groups, and other valuable initiatives. This accomplishment is truly remarkable.
Hurley mentioned that Evelyn’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation has raised over one billion dollars for cancer research. Alongside her significant philanthropic work and contributions towards eradicating cancer, Evelyn is recognized as one of the originators of the pink ribbon for breast cancer. Hurley expressed her appreciation for this choice, stating that a large portion of her wardrobe consists of pink and that she has always adored the color. According to Hurley, Evelyn Lauder's decision to make pink the color of breast cancer was indeed a brilliant one.
Evelyn, who battled breast cancer, died of ovarian cancer in 2011 at age 75.
