How To Find The Dung Eater's MessageHow To Get To Outer Moat In Elden Ring
The Outer Moat is a location in Elden Ring that is only mentioned during a certain part of the Dung Eater’s Questline. In historical context, moats are ponds of medium size that typically surround buildings such as castles, serving as an initial form of protection. In Elden Ring, the Royal Capital, Leyndell, is surrounded by several small ponds.
Upon completing specific tasks in the NPC’s Questline in Elden Ring, the Dung Eater will leave a message inviting Tarnished to a place known as the outer moat. If players wish to progress in the Dung Eater’s Quest and explore this area, it is essential to visit this location.
Updated August 21st, 2023:
In order to fully experience all that Elden Ring has to offer, including unlocking multiple endings, players will eventually encounter the enigmatic Dung Eater NPC. However, some aspects of his questline can be perplexing, especially a segment where players must confront the Dung Eater in a place known as the Outer Moat. Fortunately, reaching this location is relatively straightforward if players are aware of where to search. To aid players in locating the Outer Moat in Elden Ring, we have provided an updated guide accompanied by a video.
How To Find The Dung Eater's Message
To unlock the message that guides players to the Outer Moat, they must progress through Elden Ring's Dung Eater's Questline. Once the Dung Eater is freed from his cell beneath Leyndell, a sign will appear in the location where he was previously seated within Roundtable Hold (the room just beyond the Twin Maiden Husks). The Dung Eater initially spawns in this room after reaching the Altus Plateau. After exhausting conversations with the Dung Eater, players must acquire a Seedbed Curse to proceed to the next stage of the questline.
These can be found in multiple locations, but the most easily accessible one is in the alternate version of Roundtable Hold in Leyndell. Once you hand this over to him, he will reward you with the Sewer-Gaol key. In order for the Dung Eater Outer Moat message to appear, he must be released from this Gaol. Make your way to the Subterranean Shunning Grounds and drop down a hole in the pipes to the left of the main grace area.
Proceed through the pipe, eliminating any rats and Miranda flowers you encounter, until you come across his cell. Unlock it, engage in conversation with him until he stops speaking, and then go back to Roundtable Hold. His shade will now be replaced with a message. If you are attempting to advance in Blackguard Big Boggart’s Quest, engage with him in the Outer Moat, purchase as many Boiled Prawns and Crabs as you can, and then restart the area to find him defeated.
How To Get To Outer Moat In Elden Ring
The Outer Moat is located to the southeast of the Outer Wall Battleground site of grace in the Capital Outskirts. It can be found in the Altus Plateau, just outside Leyndell. To reach the Outer Moat, head east from the Outer Wall Battleground grace towards the broken stairs. Continue moving east past the gravestones and Skeletons until you come across a fork in the path. One path leads east, while the other leads to southeastern roads.
Choose the southeastern road from the fork to reach the Outer Moat in Elden Ring. Keep moving forward between the trees as you descend the slope. Eventually, you will come across a shallow pond filled with small Crabs. These Crabs drop valuable Elden Ring crafting materials. This is the same Outer Moat that is described to players through the Dung Eater's message. In the Outer Moat, the Dung Eater will invade. You can attempt the invasion multiple times, but you must defeat him in order to access the end of his extensive questline.
Elden Ring is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
