Manchester United expressed their support for their ex-goalkeeper by tweeting, "Our thoughts and strength are with you, Edwin."

Fulham Football Club, where Van der Sar played for four years prior to joining United, sent their well wishes by tweeting, "Wishing Edwin a swift recovery. Our thoughts are with you."

The PFA expressed their support for Edwin and his family. During his time at United, Van der Sar achieved four Premier League titles and also won the Champions League in 2008, a trophy he previously lifted with Ajax.

After retiring, he rejoined Ajax and assumed the position of chief executive in 2016. However, he decided to leave the post at the conclusion of the previous season due to the club's disappointing performance, finishing third in the Eredivisie and failing to qualify for the Champions League. Van der Sar declared his intention to step down from his position after serving nearly 11 years on the club's board.

"I have an urge to create some space, recharge, and pursue different endeavors," he tweeted in late May.

"It doesn't sit well with me to make decisions regarding the future of this exceptional club in the upcoming period. Therefore, I've opted to step down."

After making over 200 appearances for Ajax and achieving European success under the guidance of Louis van Gaal, the Dutch goalkeeper transferred to Juventus before eventually joining Fulham in 2001. Moving forward, he made a switch to Old Trafford four years later, where Van der Sar enjoyed further triumphs, including winning the League Cup twice and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite this, Van der Sar retired from football after suffering defeat to Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final and again at Wembley in 2011. He had represented the Netherlands in 130 international matches, becoming the nation's most-capped player for a period of time.
