After an underwhelming performance in the Eredivisie, with the club finishing third and failing to secure a Champions League spot, Van der Sar made the announcement of his resignation from the club's board. This decision comes after serving nearly 11 years in his role.
"I have realized the importance of stepping back, finding solace, and engaging in different activities," he shared via Twitter in late May.
"The process of making crucial decisions regarding the future of this exceptional club feels quite unsettling. Hence, I have made the difficult choice to tender my resignation."
After making over 200 appearances for Ajax and achieving European success alongside Louis van Gaal's team, the goalkeeper from the Netherlands transferred to Juventus, later becoming a part of Fulham in 2001. Following four years, he made a move to Old Trafford, where Van der Sar secured triumphs in the League Cup twice and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup.
United, however, experienced defeat against Barcelona in the finals of the Champions League in both 2009 and 2011 at Wembley, marking the culmination of Van der Sar's career as he retired thereafter.
Having represented the Netherlands on 130 occasions, Van der Sar briefly held the record for the highest number of international appearances for his country.
