"Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We're thinking of you."

Ajax provided no additional information, but reports have stated that Van der Sar was hospitalized in Croatia following a cerebral haemorrhage. Manchester United expressed their support for their former goalkeeper with a heartfelt message on Twitter: "Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Edwin. We send you all our love and strength."

Fulham, where Van der Sar played for four years prior to joining United, expressed their well wishes for his quick recovery through a tweet: "Our thoughts are with Edwin, and we hope he recovers swiftly," tweeted Fulham Football Club.

During his tenure of six years at United, Van der Sar achieved four Premier League victories and also secured the Champions League trophy in 2008, which he had previously won with Ajax.

After retiring, he went back to Ajax and assumed the position of chief executive in 2016. However, he decided to leave the post at the conclusion of the previous season due to a disappointing performance by the club, finishing third in the Eredivisie and failing to qualify for the Champions League. Van der Sar, who had been on the club's board for nearly 11 years, announced his decision to step down.

"At the end of May, on Twitter, he expressed the urge to step back, take a break, and engage in other activities," he tweeted. "Making crucial decisions regarding the future of this extraordinary club in the upcoming period does not feel right. Therefore, I have chosen to step down from my position."
