Why The DC Universe Isn't Moving Forward With Black Adam 2

Black Adam found himself entangled in a whirlpool of changing leadership. During the process of creation, development, and filming of Black Adam, we encountered setbacks due to COVID and subsequent shutdowns. Despite bouncing back, there was a series of transitions in key positions of authority. As you might expect, when a publicly traded company of such magnitude experiences turnover in leadership, new decision-makers may not always align with your creative and financial philosophy. This remains one of the greatest enigmas. Consider having the biggest opportunity of your career, although without China's involvement, potentially leaving behind an additional $100 or $200 million. You possess a superhero and aspire to expand the franchise. The reintroduction of Superman and Henry Cavill, which thrilled the world, became part of our diverse superhero roster, featuring Black Adam with men and women of color. Hence, I believe that Black Adam was caught in the complicated web of these leadership shifts. However, ultimately, it is comparable to new owners acquiring an NFL team and declaring, "I will be selecting my own head coach and quarterback," regardless of the number of Super Bowl victories or rings accumulated by others.

The initial vision for the DCEU's Black Adam was ambitious, promising the exciting return of Henry Cavill's Superman to face off against Johnson's antihero. There were plans to expand this storyline into a potential sequel and even a third film centered around the Superman battle. However, with the recent appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the DC Studios' CEOs and their introduction of the new DC Universe, these plans have been discarded.

Johnson had previously hinted at finding another way to stay involved in the DCU, despite Black Adam 2 being canceled.
