The long-awaited release date for the upcoming Christmas action movie, Red One, has been announced for 2024 during the holiday season. Starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Chris Evans in lead roles, Red One has been billed as a globe-trotting, action-adventure Christmas movie, though its actual plot is unknown.

The star-studded Red One cast also includes Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, J.K. Simmons, Nick Kroll, and Kristofer Hivju. During the filming of Red One from October 2022 to February 2023, multiple set photos surfaced online, teasing J.K. Simmons' bulked-up Santa Claus and the inclusion of Krampus.

According to Deadline, the Red One release date has been set for November 15, 2024. The movie will be released exclusively in theaters before ultimately streaming on Prime Video at a later date.

Red One and Amazon MGM's Release Strategy

Red One, which is being distributed by Amazon MGM, will continue the studio's recent release strategy. Amazon acquired MGM in 2021, and the studio has been releasing movies in theaters first before streaming on Prime Video at a later date. This strategy has seen success with titles like Ben Affleck's Air and Emerald Fennell's Saltburn, the latter of which releases December 22 on Prime Video.

By releasing in theaters on November 15, the Christmas-themed Red One is aiming to capitalize on the historically profitable pre-Thanksgiving period of the holiday season. However, Red One will face competition from another holiday movie, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and Robert De Niro's mob movie, Alto Knights, both releasing on the same day.

Red One has hopes of launching a franchise reimagining holiday mythology, though its success in theaters and on Prime Video during the 2024 holiday season will determine this outcome.
