Johnson told Vanity Fair, "I wouldn’t rule it out. It would be a great opportunity to help people, so it’s possible. This past election shows that anything can happen." when asked whether he would consider running, pointing to the 2016 election of Trump as evidence that seasoned politicians don’t always prevail.

"About a year ago, the discussion about my potential campaign started gaining momentum," Johnson revealed in a GQ interview. "I felt a genuine sense of seriousness, prompting me to reflect on my response and ensure it was both honest and respectful. I didn't want to dismiss the idea with a flippant response like 'We'll have three-day weekends and no taxes!'"

Regarding his potential candidacy, he remarked, "I believe that's a viable option."

Johnson told Variety he would “100 percent” consider running but noted that he wouldn’t be able to continue his work as an actor.

While I never boasted about it or made public declarations, the story gained traction with Americans expressing a desire for me to run. I felt the need to listen and truly consider the possibility. Politics is not my usual field, but I understand the importance of learning and observing. I continue to hope for leadership that brings our country together during challenging times, which I feel is lacking in our current presidency. I deeply care about our country and our people, especially now. Decency, character, and leadership are crucial to me.

Johnson also contemplated the selection of a running mate. "Two essential qualities that come to mind are that I would desire my VP to be an exceptional leader and an exemplary individual," he elaborated. "Whether they hail from Hollywood, Washington, the healthcare sector, Wall Street, or academia."

Following a poll indicating that 46% of Americans would back a Johnson candidacy, he playfully responded on social media. "I'm not certain our Founding Fathers ever imagined a six-four, bald, tattooed, half-Black, half-Samoan, tequila-drinking, pick-up truck-driving, fanny pack-wearing guy joining their club - but if it ever happens, it would be my privilege to serve the people," he tweeted.

In a profile for Vanity Fair, Johnson confessed to beginning to delve into the potential of a political campaign. He revealed, "I've conducted some initial research and analysis to understand the feasibility and potential outlook for the future." Additionally, he noted that "the signs are all very encouraging — for instance, in 2024, and again in 2028."

He went on to admit that he lacks a wealth of experience in the realm of lawmaking. "Honestly, when it comes down to it, I am not well-versed in politics," he confessed. "I am not well-versed in policy. I have a deep concern for our country. I care about every single American who bleeds red, and that's all of them. And -- let's not kid ourselves -- I may possess some strong leadership qualities, but that doesn't automatically qualify me as a great presidential candidate."

Johnson stated that he is not considering a political campaign at this time, as he wants to prioritize his role as a father to his three daughters. He emphasized that being present for his children, especially during this crucial time in their lives, is his top priority.

During an interview on Trevor Noah's "What Now?" podcast, Johnson revealed that in late 2022 he was approached by unnamed "parties" who suggested he consider running for president after a poll indicated that 46 percent of Americans would support his campaign. Describing it as a surprise, he mentioned that they referenced the poll and conducted their own research to show he could be a serious contender. Johnson admitted that politics has never been his goal, and he has been turned off by many aspects of it.

The actor and former wrestler also discussed how his wrestling career kept him away from his eldest daughter, Simone, and he didn't want to repeat that with his younger children. Johnson explained that this was a key concern he raised with the "parties" who pointed out how others in similar situations had handled it. While he hasn't completely ruled out a presidential run, he emphasized that he would only consider it if it is what the people truly want.

Johnson later shared with Jimmy Fallon that he finds it surreal to hear people talk about wanting him to lead the nation. He reminisced about his days wrestling in flea markets for a meager paycheck, and now, years later, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to even consider a potential campaign. He mentioned that he would consider it "down the road," possibly after his children are older, as being a present father is the most important thing to him.

During an interview with Today, he expressed his unwavering belief in the importance of hard work, controlling what can be controlled, and putting in effort with humility, hunger, and gratitude. He also hinted at the possibility of running for office.
