Dwayne Johnson Aims to Create Impactful Films Alongside the Fast & Furious Franchise

Dwayne The Rock Johnson aims to make impactful movies while continuing his involvement in the adrenaline-fueled Fast & Furious franchise In the upcoming drama, he portrays Mark Kerr, delving into the fighter's tumultuous and lightning-paced journey

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is set to make a dramatic shift in his next film, The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie. In a recent interview with Variety, Johnson expressed his desire to pursue more dramatic roles while still continuing to make the action-packed movies he is famous for.

"I'm at a stage in my career where I'm looking to challenge myself in new ways. I want to create films that have a deeper meaning, that delve into the human experience and depict real struggles and pain," Johnson explained.

In The Smashing Machine, Johnson portrays Mark Kerr, a notorious extreme fighter in the world of mixed martial arts, who struggled with drug addiction in his personal life. Johnson was attracted to the film because Safdie aimed to portray a raw and authentic story with characters that are genuine and sometimes unsettling.

Johnson will continue to appear in the type of sprawling, big-budget action and adventure films he is famous for, but with The Smashing Machine, he is venturing into new territory.

"I want to make it clear that this is not a departure from big, mainstream movies. I love making them, and they are incredibly valuable and important," he explained. "But there's a time and a place for them. At this point in my career, I want something more. And by more, I don't mean I want more box office success. I mean I want more humanity. That's why Benny Safdie is the perfect, collaborative and passionate partner for me."

HBO released a documentary about Mark Kerr titled The Smashing Machine in 2002, while the Safdie film provides a dramatic portrayal of the fighter's life. Johnson's upcoming movies also include Red One with Chris Evans, Jungle Cruise 2, and additional Fast & Furious films.
