Warner Bros. has officially delayed the release of Dune: Part Two due to the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes, pushing it back to March 15, 2024.
The strikes have resulted in the cessation of writing and filming for various projects, forcing the shutdown of several, including those that were already finished, such as Dune: Part Two.
As a consequence of this delay, Dune: Part Two will not meet the eligibility criteria for the 2024 Oscars. Instead, it will qualify for the 2025 Oscars, potentially providing other films with less competition at the awards ceremony.
The release of Dune 2 was postponed due to the ongoing strike of writers and actors. This delay coincided with a reshuffling of schedules for another major Warner Bros. film.
On May 1st, the Writers Guild of America voted to go on strike after negotiations with the studios for a new deal fell through. The actors union, SAG-AFTRA, joined the strike on July 14th when their own negotiations with the studios ended without reaching an agreement. As a result of these strikes, no writing or filming involving actors can take place, leading to the shutdown of nearly all projects. Even completed films, such as Dune: Part Two, are not exempt from the impact, as actors are unable to promote any projects while on strike.
Warner Bros. has officially announced a new release date for Dune: Part Two, which is now scheduled for March 15, 2024. This is a delay of about five and a half months from its original release date of November 3, 2023. In addition, the release date for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has also been pushed back from March 14th to April 12th, 2024. Last month, there were discussions within Warner Bros. about potentially postponing Dune 2 and Aquaman 2 due to the ongoing actors' strike.
The actor's strike will have a significant impact on Dune 2, as the movie boasts a stellar ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, and more. It is crucial for the success of Dune 2 to have these well-known actors promoting the film, which explains Warner Bros.' decision to postpone the release date and accommodate their schedules. Moreover, when Dune was released in early 2021, amidst the tail end of the pandemic, it raked in over $400 million at the box office. While this is certainly impressive, it could have earned even more if not for the pandemic.
As a consequence of this delay, Dune 2 will not be eligible for nominations at the 2024 Oscars but will instead qualify for the 2025 Oscars. Dune received 10 Oscar nominations and won 6 awards, creating high expectations for its sequel to make a significant impact at the Academy Awards as well. However, the absence of Dune: Part Two means that Oppenheimer will face even less competition at the 2024 Oscars than previously anticipated.
The strikes have significantly impacted the release of Dune: Part Two, making it one of the most affected films this year. A growing number of actors are expressing their frustration with the ongoing strike. However, there is a glimmer of hope as negotiations between the writers and the studios have recently resumed, raising prospects of a relatively prompt resolution.
Mark your calendars for March 15, 2024, as Dune: Part Two is slated for its theatrical release.
