Exciting update for fans of Blue Bloods: It looks like the beloved police drama may not be coming to an end just yet. Donnie Wahlberg, known for his role as Danny Reagan on the show, hinted that discussions are underway for the series to go beyond season 14. (Earlier, CBS had stated that the current season would be the show's final one.)
During a conversation on SiriusXM's Radio Andy with his New Kids on the Block bandmates, host Andy Cohen brought up the topic of Blue Bloods potentially being in its final season.
Wahlberg responded with a light-hearted tone, saying, "Possibly, supposedly. But there are rumors floating around, so we'll have to wait and see what unfolds."
He continued to express his feelings about the show, saying, "You know, it's beloved... It's crazy, it's absolutely crazy."
When asked about which of his fellow NKOTB stars he would like to see on the series, he quickly responded that Joey McIntyre is easily "a no-brainer."
“I’m sure he’d be willing if there was a good part,” he explained. “But it just hasn’t been the right thing.”
Donnie Wahlberg Teases That Blue Bloods Might Not Come to an End
CBS announced in November 2023 that Blue Bloods will be concluding with season 14. The season will be divided into two parts. The first part, consisting of 10 episodes, premiered on February 16. The second part is scheduled to air in the fall and will conclude with eight episodes. The filming of the second part took place after production resumed post the months-long SAG-AFTRA strike.
Chatter about Blue Bloods possibly ending started in early 2023 when the show got renewed after the cast and producers agreed to a pay cut. In April of that same year, Wahlberg shared with We his positive outlook on the show's future.
"I'm always hopeful," he mentioned. "I take each episode as it comes and try to enjoy the experience. That's why I've had a great time on the show for 13 years."
He mentioned his belief that Blue Bloods has the potential to reach the same level of success as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, now in its 25th season. He also playfully mentioned being open to the idea of a Blue Bloods spinoff.
In a light-hearted manner, he joked about a potential spinoff where Danny and Erin become private investigators and relocate to Hawaii. However, he dismissed the idea as it felt too similar to Tom Selleck's iconic 1980s series, Magnum, P.I.
The series Blue Bloods first aired in 2010, depicting the lives of the Reagan family who serve as officers in the NYPD. The family works under the leadership of NYC police commissioner Frank Reagan, played by Selleck. Alongside Frank are his father, Henry Reagan, portrayed by Len Cariou, and his children: daughter Erin Reagan, played by Bridget Moynahan, and sons Danny and Jamie Reagan, portrayed by Wahlberg and Will Estes respectively.
New episodes of Blue Bloods are broadcast on CBS on Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
