The upcoming Daredevil: Born Again will be the next major story in the MCU centered around Daredevil, prompting fans to revisit the comics for a deeper dive into the character's rich history. With decades worth of stories to explore, there are numerous tales that delve into Daredevil's origins and extraordinary abilities. Before his next appearance in the MCU, let's take a closer look at Daredevil's powers in both the comics and the MCU.

Radar sense

Perhaps Daredevil’s most prominent power is his incredible 360-degree radar sense. Daredevil’s radar sense gives him a keen awareness of everything around him. 

The MCU series portrays the radar sense as a vague way to perceive the world with a "world on fire" approach, while the comics present it as a highly precise method of viewing. Daredevil's radar sense functions differently than echolocation, despite what the 2003 movie suggests. With the radar sense, Daredevil can compensate for his lost eyesight and is able to perform acrobatic feats, enhanced by his keen sense of touch and balance. However, stories where Daredevil regains his vision depict him at a disadvantage in combat.

Enhanced senses

Daredevil's radar sense isn't the only enhanced sense he possesses. The extent of his other enhanced senses depends on his experience and the writer's interpretation of his abilities. In the first issue of Daredevil, his abilities were fairly basic, such as being able to hear a person's heartbeat, recognize someone by their scent, gauge the number of bullets in a gun by its weight, and count the grains of salt on a pretzel with his tongue.

Over time, his abilities have truly become extraordinary. Daredevil has developed into a living lie detector due to his power to sense heartbeats, and his heightened sense of touch enables him to perceive temperature shifts when someone enters a room.

Expert ninja training

It may not be a power, but it’s still worth highlighting Daredevil’s phenomenal fighting prowess. Daredevil is an honest-to-god ninja, after all. 

From childhood, Daredevil was trained as a fighter and assisted his father in boxing matches. His accident resulted in enhanced abilities, and he was further trained by Stick, a grandmaster of the ninja cult, The Chaste. Although Daredevil would occasionally team up with The Chaste to fight The Hand, he primarily used his powers to protect Hell’s Kitchen.

Is Daredevil blind? 

From a young age, Daredevil has been blind. When a blind man was in danger of being hit by a truck, a young Matt Murdock heroically saved him but ended up being exposed to a radioactive isotope from the spilled truck, which resulted in his own blindness.

The same radioactive isotope is what gives Daredevil his extraordinary powers. While Daredevil's blindness is often depicted as a unique advantage, stories where he temporarily loses his radar sense show him at a disadvantage in combat.

Numerous tales have circulated over time suggesting that Matt Murdock could undergo surgery to regain his vision. In the early comics, Karen Page urged Matt to consider an experimental procedure that could potentially restore his sight, and other characters such as Moon Dragon, Beyonder, and Iron Man have also found ways to restore his eyesight. However, Daredevil has consistently refused these offers, believing that the potential loss of his enhanced abilities outweighs the benefit of regaining his eyesight.

Enhanced Senses

Daredevil's enhanced senses, while advantageous, can also be a vulnerability. If any of his senses are successfully overwhelmed, he can be put at a disadvantage or even harmed.

In some stories, his senses have been taken to the extreme, such as in the '80s when they were driven into overdrive, forcing him to require an isolation chamber. Other tales have shown methods of confusing or overloading his senses, such as conflicting stories being told in the same room, causing the heartbeat of two individuals to become too similar for Daredevil to distinguish between them.

A fun implication of this is Daredevil’s struggle in the modern age. His radar sense can’t see through water, so someone can use fire suppression sprinklers to dull his vision. Even more troublesome, his enhanced senses are absolutely useless when presented with a modern smartphone screen, leading to several moments where an iPhone nearly ruined Daredevil’s greatest secret.

Non-superhuman

Despite his superhero abilities, Daredevil is still mortal and vulnerable to the same challenges as any ordinary person. This includes the effects of aging, illnesses, and the physical strain of fighting crime.

The isotope that boosted his powers didn't provide any added resistance to damage. Bullets, stab wounds, and fractures all bring him down.

He's also incredibly resilient. He can deaden his pain, but much of it comes from his upbringing by a boxer and a ninja cult, and his deep Catholic beliefs. The outcome is a hero with an extraordinary pain tolerance and an unwavering determination.

As a Gen Z fan, I am thrilled about the return of Daredevil to the MCU. His unique abilities, including his radar sense, enhanced senses, and expert ninja training, make him a captivating character. I appreciate the way the comics and the MCU have portrayed his blindness as both a challenge and a source of strength. However, I do have some concerns about the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series. I hope that the writers will stay true to the character's essence and not stray too far from the original comics. Daredevil's vulnerability and the moral dilemmas he faces are crucial aspects of his story, and I hope they will be explored in depth in the new series. Overall, I am excited to see Daredevil back in action and can't wait to experience his adventures once again.
