Disney fans have reason to rejoice as Hocus Pocus 3 is reportedly in the works. The popular 1993 film centered around the Sanderson sisters, three witches who were brought back to life centuries after their execution in Salem, Massachusetts. After the success of the 2022 Disney+ exclusive sequel, Hocus Pocus 2, fans have been eagerly anticipating news of a third installment. While details are scarce, The New York Times recently reported that another sequel is indeed in development, with Walt Disney Pictures President Sean Bailey confirming the news. However, no information has been released regarding the cast, plot, or release date, indicating that the project is still in its early stages.
How Hocus Pocus 2 Paved The Way For A Third Movie
In the conclusion of Hocus Pocus 2, the Sanderson sisters' story seemingly came to a close. Winifred's insatiable desire for power led her to cast a spell that caused her to lose her beloved sisters, Sarah and Mary, who vanished into oblivion. Overwhelmed with regret, Winifred relinquished her powers with the assistance of Salem's new witches, in order to reunite with her sisters. This provided a conclusive ending to the witches' tale and seemed to eliminate any possibility of a sequel.
However, Hocus Pocus 2 left several loose ends that could be developed further in a potential third film. The film's conclusion offered a glimpse of the Mother Witch, portrayed by Hannah Waddingham of Ted Lasso fame, in the form of a crow flying away from Salem. This hinted at a possible return for the character in Hocus Pocus 3 and the potential expansion of her role. Furthermore, a post-credits scene in Hocus Pocus 2 revealed the existence of another Black Flame Candle in Salem, which is renowned for its ability to revive the Sanderson sisters. Thus, there is a plausible method of bringing the witches back to life.
Assuming Disney is able to put together a script, it's hard to imagine a Hocus Pocus 3 being made without the involvement of the Sanderson sisters, who were instrumental in making the original movie the beloved cult classic it is today. Fortunately, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy have all expressed interest in reprising their roles, so it's likely that the trio will once again breathe life into the iconic characters. Additionally, the third installment could also provide an opportunity for original stars Omri Katz, Thora Birch, and Vinessa Shaw to return to the bewitching world of Hocus Pocus.
