Gambit, the least favored mode in Destiny 2, is receiving a new map during The Final Shape era. However, this addition might be insufficient and delayed to revive the mode effectively.
To disrupt the gameplay loop, Bungie is introducing two new factions. Nonetheless, Gambit's future appears grim as resources are being redirected, resulting in limited availability of fresh content.
Destiny 2's Season of the Deep is nearing its end after a successful run that addressed several problems in the Lightfall campaign. Bungie has announced a major showcase at the end of the month to provide details on Season 22 and The Final Shape expansion. Prior to this event, Bungie released a post discussing the current state of Destiny 2, acknowledging player concerns, upcoming changes, and the challenges the team is facing. Among the issues raised by players, there is disappointment in Bungie's failure to adequately address problems with PvP and Gambit, with the latter receiving particular criticism.
Gambit is widely seen as the least popular mode in Destiny 2, despite having a small group of dedicated fans. It struggles to attract a larger player base due to various reasons such as lackluster rewards, repetitive gameplay, and other factors. Bungie has been silent on this issue for a significant period, only making occasional changes to the mode over the years, resulting in more content being removed than added. However, the recent State of the Game post offers some potential improvements for Gambit mode. Nevertheless, these changes may also indicate the mode's eventual demise.
Destiny 2's Gambit May be Getting its Last Update in The Final Shape
Gambit, in The Final Shape era, is gaining a new map for the first time since the 2020 Beyond Light expansion. This brings the total number of maps from four to five. However, it should be noted that this is an old map that was vaulted during Beyond Light, rather than a completely new one. Many players feel that this is not enough to save Destiny 2's Gambit from a complete shutdown, as the lack of map variety between matches remains a significant issue.
Another concern in the game mode is the limited enemy variety, as there are currently only five enemy races to defeat, with little distinction in their abilities and strategies. In The Final Shape expansion of Destiny 2, Bungie aims to introduce two new factions: the Shadow Legion from Lightfall and the Lucent Hive from The Witch Queen. These additions have the potential to bring about significant changes to the overall gameplay loop. However, it is important to note that these additions are still at least six months away, assuming The Final Shape expansion launches in late February of next year.
Although Bungie has good intentions, there is a possibility that Gambit may struggle to thrive given the studio's limited resources. Bungie has acknowledged that investing more in Gambit would divert attention from other aspects of the game, making it a less appealing option. Additionally, Gambit will become optional, allowing players to focus on Crucible and Vanguard to maximize their Power Level in Destiny 2. This suggests that there may not be any future updates or content additions to save Drifter's dedicated playlist. Furthermore, Bungie is removing the Freelance node in Gambit, which catered to solo players, and replacing it with a Fireteam Matchmaking node to expedite the matchmaking process. Sadly, it appears that the future of Gambit in Destiny 2 is uncertain, with the likelihood that the playlist will no longer receive significant updates and may only feature a few new weapons for players to grind for.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
