Screen Rant: I was pleasantly surprised by how deeply Spaceman affected me. The film resonated with me on a personal level. Can you share what drew you to this script and how you came to the decision that it would be your next project?

Johan Renck admits to having a history of failed marriages and relationships, attributing it to not spending enough time with his parents while they were alive. He also mentions friends who have strayed from the path due to his own desires, ambitions, and obsession with his job in various creative fields such as music, writing, photography, and filmmaking.

Despite acknowledging a sense of vanity and narcissism in his need to express himself through his work, Renck sees it as a calling that he cannot ignore. After completing a demanding project, he often contemplates changing professions and even considered opening a restaurant in Brooklyn, where he resides.

Living within walking distance from home meant that I never had to travel far. My kids could easily come and eat at the restaurant after school, and it was all so convenient. When I first received the script for this project, I had a moment of doubt, thinking, "Here we go again." However, after reading the script and the book it was based on by Jaroslav Kalfar, I knew that this was the story I needed to tell. It felt like a form of atonement, a chance at redemption.

Adam Sandler, not typically associated with brooding roles, delivered a remarkable performance in this film. What led you to believe that Adam Sandler was the perfect fit for the character of Jakub?

Johan Renck expressed his admiration for Adam Sandler, highlighting his versatility and ability to excel in a wide range of genres. From silly humor to sophisticated wit, Sandler's talent knows no bounds, as seen in his comedic and dramatic roles in films like Punch-Drunk Love and projects with the Safdie brothers. Renck noted Sandler's technical prowess in portraying different characters convincingly.

Renck also touched upon the idea that comedians, like Sandler, have a unique opportunity to showcase their vulnerability. He mentioned that when a comedian sheds the comedic persona and reveals their true self, they appear more vulnerable to the audience. This vulnerability may be more pronounced compared to actors who solely take on serious and dramatic roles.

Johan Renck Believes Carrey Mulligan "Is The Greatest Actress Of Her Generation"

And I believe we have witnessed this kind of raw vulnerability in performances such as Peter Sellers in Being There or Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine. These actors were able to evoke deep emotions without relying on traditional comedic elements, making the audience truly connect with the characters as if they had exposed their true selves.

Carey also gives this authentic performance throughout the course of this movie as Lenka. Can you talk to me about what she brought to the role beyond the page?

Johan Renck praises Carey Mulligan as not only an incredible human being but also as the greatest actress of her generation. Renck admires Mulligan's immaculate performance, noting her intelligence and deep understanding of her character and the performance requirements. He also highlights Mulligan's technical skills, emphasizing her proficiency in the craft.

Renck appreciates Mulligan's straightforward approach to acting, noting the absence of method acting or unnecessary drama. He recalls a scene where Mulligan had to deliver a big dramatic crying moment and how she simply asked to roll the camera without any fuss. Renck was amazed by Mulligan's ability to immediately immerse herself in the scene, leaving him in awe of her talent.

Johan Renck expressed his admiration for her, stating that she is absolutely incredible. He feels honored to work with her, as she brings a significant amount of insight and depth to the role. Having experienced a similar life to that of the astronaut in the show, with a demanding career and time away from family, she was able to fully grasp the character's complexities. Additionally, her personal connection to a musician who is frequently on tour further enhanced her understanding and ability to relate to the character.
