Diablo 4 offers a wide array of optional side quests that not only aid in character progression and exploration, but also includes a standout quest that will surely captivate horror enthusiasts. The Unyielding Flesh quest pays homage to one of the most beloved horror films of all time, effectively intertwining its iconic elements into the game's narrative, much to the delight of fans of the renowned movie franchise.
The presence of cosmic horror has always been a defining characteristic of the Diablo series, and Diablo 4 exemplifies this with its focus on the ascent of Lilith. From the eerie demons lurking within the game's haunting dungeons to the formidable cultists encountered in the unforgettable prologue, and even the protagonist's involuntary connection to Lilith herself, the game remains loyal to delivering a spine-chilling cosmic horror gaming experience. Through Unyielding Flesh, a side quest located within the Fractured Peaks, the game solidifies this tradition by acknowledging a film that is considered by many film enthusiasts as the epitome of cosmic horror: Hellraiser (1987).
The Side Quest: Unyielding Flesh
Content:
The adventure commences innocently. Found in the town of Yelesna, players will encounter a woman named Krystyna. She earnestly requests that the player character locate her husband, Feodor, whom she suspects of abandoning her for someone else. If the player agrees to assist her, she will accompany them to the nearby Gnarled Timbers, a wilderness area. There, they will stumble upon a horrific scene: Feodor's skinned body hangs suspended by chains, his arms and legs bound.
Unbeknownst to them, a demon named Yulia the Hellbound has possessed Feodor. To complete the quest, the player must eliminate Yulia. Before doing so, if the player lingers, they will stumble upon an Easter egg: Feodor will audibly utter, "Such unspeakable sights... I have witnessed... Such intense pleasure... such agonizing pain... I crave more...." Once Yulia is defeated, the player must retrieve a special dagger from Feodor's chest.
The Hellraiser Connection
Fans of the classic film Hellraiser may recognize Feodor's dying words as a nod to some of its most iconic moments. In the movie, Kirsty is pursued by her villainous uncle Frank, who escapes from hell with the assistance of Kirsty's stepmother Julia. Frank remains on the run from a group of demon-like beings called Cenobites. While they serve as secondary antagonists in the first Hellraiser film, they have become the faces of the franchise, with Pinhead, their leader, joining the ranks of beloved movie monsters like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers.
In the final scene of the film, Pinhead utters the famous line, "We have such sights to show you," as he corners Kirsty. This line bears a resemblance to Feodor's reference to the horrifying sights he has witnessed. Just as Pinhead and the Cenobites bring their victims to their nightmarish realm for eternal torment, it appears that Yulia has subjected Feodor to a similar fate.
Uncle Frank, however, receives the majority of this tribute. The chains that restrain Feodor bear a striking resemblance to the ones that ripped Frank apart during the gruesome climax of the film. Additionally, Feodor's comments about "pleasure" and "pain" mirror Frank's recollection of his time with the Cenobites: "The Cenobites granted me an unparalleled experience—pain and pleasure, inseparable." Feodor finds himself in a situation quite similar to Frank's; interestingly, both men share the initial letter "f."
Why Hellraiser?
Why did the Diablo 4 writers choose to incorporate a reference to Hellraiser, out of all the films available? The answer to this question, like many other enigmas in Diablo 4, can be found within Lilith. Much like her, the Cenobites possess an intense preoccupation with fulfilling the desires of mortal victims. These demonic-like entities only manifest themselves when summoned by an individual who willingly solves the intricate puzzle cube known as the Lament Configuration. They do not apprehend Frank due to his deserving punishment, but rather because he actively yearns for it.
The concept should resonate with Diablo 4 players, as Lilith operates in a similar manner. Throughout the game, players witness her manipulating humans into succumbing to their base desires, even at their own expense. The player character themselves must resist Lilith's temptation at various points in the story. Lilith shares similarities with the Cenobites, although instead of chains and eerie blue lights, her arrival is signified by a flurry of blood petals.
Ultimately, this Easter egg serves as a reminder that Lilith is just as horrifying as Pinhead, emphasizing Diablo 4's cosmic horror elements. Amidst the fast-paced action, it's easy to overlook the demonic theme of the Diablo games. However, the inclusion of a Hellraiser reference suggests that Diablo 4 proudly embraces its cosmic horror origins. Moments like these enhance the game's cinematic quality and help it to stand out among other RPGs.
