The Design of Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 (7435)

Joe Robinson

The Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 laptop boasts a sleek and minimalist design. Its versatile nature allows for various modes of usage as described by Dell: laptop, tablet, stand (with the display facing the user and the keyboard facing down), or tent (where the laptop is flipped inside-out, resting on its front edges on a table).

In addition to its versatile features, the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 resembles a typical laptop with a sleek silver design. The top lid features the Dell logo. Opening it reveals a 14-inch FHD display, with the integrated webcam subtly positioned within the bezel-free screen. On either side of the camera's privacy shutter are two microphones.

The laptop's base is equipped with a full-size 10-keyless keyboard and a precision touchpad. Positioned at the top-right of the keyboard is an integrated fingerprint reader for biometrics, providing enhanced security. Additionally, on each side of the keyboard, there are four-inch long up-firing speakers that deliver immersive audio. The bottom of the laptop comprises a spacious cooling system, ensuring optimal performance and preventing overheating.

Ports: Get Down to Basics

The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 (7435) has the essential ports, although not an abundance. The left side of the device features one HDMI port and two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4.0 compatibility. The right side includes a 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack, a USB-A port, and a full-size SD card reader.

Keyboard, Touchpad, and Touchscreen: Comfy and Reliable

The inputs on the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 provided a delightful user experience. Whether engaged in gaming, browsing the internet, or working, the keyboard, touchpad, and touchscreen effortlessly completed any task.

The keyboard offers a satisfying spring and gentle click sound, while its texture provides a pleasant grip, ensuring your fingertips remain securely on the keys. The touchpad strikes a perfect balance, being large enough to be functional yet small enough to prevent accidental contact with your wrist while typing – a feature both myself and fellow lazy typists greatly appreciate.

When utilizing the touchscreen, my satisfaction with the dependability of the touch keyboard and other touch gestures remained consistently high. Unlike some touchscreens where numerous typos can be found in a touch-typed paragraph, the Inspiron proved to be exceptionally sensitive and managed to bypass most of these errors, promptly autocorrecting any blunders I may have made.

Display and Graphics: Vibrant and Satisfying

Introducing "Below Deck Down Under"!

For the majority of light to moderate laptop users, investing in a 4K laptop may not be necessary. Unless you're a content or graphics creator, the value of 4K in a laptop is debatable. Keeping this in mind, I believe that a FHD+ display like the one found on the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 (7435) is more than sufficient to captivate most users when consuming media.

I prefer high-quality 3-4K laptops, but I discovered that the 1920 x 1200p resolution, also known as WUXGA, is more than sufficient for casual gaming and streaming. Even on YouTube, I could still discern an abundance of details, like the fine hairs on a meerkat's head or the texture of a rugged cliffside.

I did observe that YouTube videos from creators who consistently upload in 4K appeared less detailed to me, but that is probably because I wasn't scrutinizing every pore and movement as if they were right in front of me. When using the Inspiron 14 2-in-1, I particularly enjoyed streaming shows like "The Great British Baking Show" and "Supernatural" because the color contrast and clarity were well-balanced, even in darker scenes. However, it is important to note that the glossy screen does result in significant glare at certain angles. Due to this, I found it more comfortable to watch shows or play games in a dimly lit room or during nighttime.

Performance: Smooth Sailing with Moderate Use

Joe Robinson

Throughout my extensive workload, my Inspiron 14 2-in-1 performed admirably. Pushing the limits of its RAM, I simultaneously streamed music on Spotify, edited photos in Photoshop, and had nearly 30 browser tabs open. This usage accounted for approximately 95% of the available memory, while the CPU consistently operated at a range of 20 to 40%. I was able to multitask as usual with minimal issues, except when running an excessive number of programs simultaneously. Luckily, thanks to the CPU's impressive six cores, 12 threads, and 19MB cache, I was able to comfortably carry out my regular tasks with ease.

I encountered some difficulties when I had approximately 30 tabs open, while simultaneously streaming YouTube and Spotify, and editing photos in Photoshop. Both my browser tabs and Photoshop froze for a few minutes, and the overall speed dropped by approximately 20%. I also experienced this issue when running Xbox in a similar working scenario. However, for most casual users, this shouldn't pose a problem. If you find that you have exceeded the Inspiron's memory capacity by running too many programs, simply close some of them and resume your work, and everything should return to smooth performance. On the other hand, if you are a heavy gamer or content creator, you may want to consider investing in a device with greater capabilities.

Gaming: Casual Gaming is a Go

Experience "The Outer Worlds"

Playing games on the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is possible, providing a satisfactory gaming experience. To optimize performance, it is recommended to close all programs, including browser windows, before starting a gaming session.

While playing a range of games like the futuristic shooter "The Outer Worlds" and the survival-based game "Grounded," I encountered latency problems whenever I had other programs open. In the case of "Grounded," I had to adjust the depth of field blur and frame rate, as well as close Spotify, in order to achieve a smoother gameplay experience.

Tablet Mode

Likewise, "The Outer Worlds" only performed optimally when I closed all other applications running simultaneously. The Inspiron is efficient for games that have minimal to moderate resource requirements, but it is not suitable for games that demand more resources. Furthermore, I encountered a specific issue with a game that would only display a black screen, even after uninstalling and reinstalling it.

The Inspiron 14 shines as a versatile 2-in-1 device. Although it may feel a tad bulky and weighty for prolonged one-handed or two-handed use, I found great satisfaction in utilizing the Inspiron 14 in its tablet mode while relaxing on the couch or lying in bed. Moreover, its convertibility proves to be advantageous during travels by air or bus.

The tablet doesn't come with a pen, and frankly, I didn't miss it because the touchscreen was so sensitive. However, there's a compatible Dell Active Pen you can purchase separately.

Inputs and Outputs: The Microphones, Speakers, and Webcam

The dual speaker system on the Inspiron exceeds expectations despite being up-firing speakers. With Dolby Atmos Cores and Waves MaxxAudio Pro, these speakers offer above-average sound quality. While not the absolute best, they deliver clear audio and impressive volume for enjoying music, movies, or gaming.

The webcam is of good quality. It produces crisp video captures in bright lighting, which was satisfactory enough for me to not use an external webcam. Nevertheless, the results were less pleasing in dim lighting. If you frequently face inadequate bright lighting, it would be advisable to invest in one of the top webcams of 2023 to avoid the frustration of blurry Zoom calls.

As for the integrated microphones, their performance is average and they are suitable for basic video conferences. However, they do not have noise cancellation capabilities. Therefore, in noisy environments, an alternative method is required to reduce the background noise picked up by the microphone.

Battery Life and Charging: Long-Lasting Power

Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 (7435) Unleashed: Unveiling a Game-Changing Hybrid Device with Exceptional Battery Life

Joe Robinson

Thanks to the improved power efficiency of the AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPU, battery life is significantly better compared to the Intel 13th Gen. With an average drain of only 10 to 15% per hour, I found that I only needed to charge the device once a day. Even when left in sleep mode and untouched, the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 only lost 46% of its battery life over a span of 48 hours.

Charging took a bit longer, but wasn't drastically slow. My device charged at a rate of 0.71% per minute, or 42.6% per hour.
