The second season of Jujutsu Kaisen concluded on December 29, 2023, with the release of episode 23, leaving Yuji Itadori marked for execution and Shibuya overrun by cursed spirits. This sets the stage for the impending chaos in Season 3. The last episode of season 2 mainly adapted chapters 136, 137, and parts of chapter 139, featuring the long-awaited debut of Yuta Okkotsu and Rika in the main series.
Yuta Okkotsu was the main protagonist of the prequel series Jujutsu Kaisen 0, with his relationship with Rika Orimoto being central to the plot. Please note that this article contains major spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen series.
Jujutsu Kaisen: The current Rika is only the husk of the previous one

Yuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto were first introduced in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie as a cursed spirit attached to Yuta. However, in the finale of the series' season 2, Yuta is shown with Rika, leading fans to question how he still has access to her after her supposed exorcism in the movie.

The explanation lies in the evolution of the Rika cursed spirit. While Rika Orimoto's spirit finds closure after the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the cursed spirit Rika persists. The cursed spirit Rika transforms into sentient storage with its own will, detached from Rika Orimoto's soul. This unique entity allows Yuta to store cursed energy reserves, techniques, and weapons, functioning as both a storage and combat partner.
Rika's consciousness improves Yuta's fighting abilities, providing versatility as she is able to carry out attacks independently based on his commands. While not as overwhelmingly powerful as depicted in the film, this transformed cursed spirit Rika essentially enabled Yuta to regain his special grade status in just a few months after the events of the movie.

The Rika currently in Jujutsu Kaisen is a cursed spirit known as a shikigami, separate from the actual spirit of Rika Orimoto. This shikigami holds the essence and emotions of Rika Orimoto, which is why it is so closely attached to Yuta Okkotsu. Despite being a cursed spirit, the connection between the Rika shikigami and Yuta is deeply rooted in the emotional remnants of Rika Orimoto's spirit.
Yuta Okkotsu made a significant impact in Season 2, Episode 23 with the now infamous quote, "I'll kill Yuji Itadori myself." This declaration sets him up as a compelling antagonist for Season 3, although it is all just a ploy for him to fake Yuji Itadori's death.
Final Thoughts
Exciting News for Fans of the Anime!
The anime has already been renewed for a season 3 following the finale of season 2. Season 3 will be adapting the Culling Games arc and will reveal a few secrets behind Yuji's parents. Many new characters like Hakari, Kashimo, and Higuruma will also be making their debut in season 3.

As a passionate fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I was thrilled to witness the highly anticipated debut of Yuta Okkotsu and Rika in the season 2 finale. The revelation of Rika's transformation into a sentient storage with its own will adds a fascinating twist to their dynamic. The concept of a cursed spirit evolving beyond its original form opens up new possibilities for character development and combat strategies.
Yuta's declaration to kill Yuji Itadori himself sets the stage for an intriguing conflict in season 3. While it's clear that Yuta's true intentions are to protect Yuji, the moral implications of his actions raise questions about the nature of heroism and sacrifice. The upcoming Culling Games arc promises to deliver even more intense battles and character growth, and I can't wait to see how Yuta and Rika's relationship continues to evolve amidst the chaos.
