In 1999, David Fincher, renowned for his dark movies including Fight Club, Zodiac, Seven, Gone Girl, and the recent The Killer with Michael Fassbender, attempted to give a fresh twist to Spider-Man's unique origin story with his movie storyline.
Peter Parker, similar to Batman, has undergone various incarnations, featuring actors such as Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and the highly acclaimed Tom Holland. Maguire and Garfield remained faithful to the conventional comic book storylines, particularly focusing on Peter's origin story. Conversely, Holland's portrayal of Spider-Man resided within the vast Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), resulting in a brief mention of his origin story.
David Fincher's proposal for a Spider-Man film faced rejection due to one major concept.
David Fincher had a Spider-Man idea focused on an older character
The Guardian's interview with Fincher revealed that he had a unique interpretation of the Spider-Man character. Rather than incorporating the traditional "bitten by a radioactive spider" backstory, Fincher aimed to center the narrative around an older Peter Parker.
Unfortunately for Fincher, in 1999, Sony executives did not seem to have faith in the visionary director's unconventional approach to this iconic character.
"They showed no interest," Fincher stated bluntly. "And I understand their reasoning. They questioned why I wanted to completely dismantle the origin story. And my response was simple: 'Because it's nonsensical?' While that origin story holds significance for many, when I examined it, all I saw was a cliché red and blue spider. I have countless options in my career, and that simply isn't one of them."
Spider-Man then approached Raimi, who cast Maguire as the protagonist. Being the initial live-action adaptation of the comic book character, the film delved deeply into the transformation of a socially awkward teenager into a superhero.
On Twitter (X), several fans expressed disagreement with Fincher criticizing the hero's origins as "dumb." However, opinions were divided regarding the wisdom of excluding it from Spider-Man's inaugural live-action production.
One fan expressed, "Rehashing it now may seem foolish... but during the year 1999, absolutely not."
Another supporter concurred, remarking, "I wouldn't go as far as calling it foolish, but we no longer require origin stories for iconic figures like Spider-Man or Superman."
Another group of individuals strongly opposed Fincher’s interpretation of the backstory, criticizing the renowned director. "I'm relieved that he didn't get the chance to direct it. If you can't honor the origin story, then you clearly lack the commitment to properly portray the character," expressed a different fan of Spider-Man.
