David Beckham stated that he was not bothered by the backlash he faced for accepting a substantial amount of money from Qatar to fulfill the role of a football ambassador during the previous year's World Cup, despite the nation's views on LGBTQ+ rights. Addressing the subject at the premiere of his new Netflix documentary, when questioned about his awareness of the experiences of gay individuals in the Arab country, he expressed, "I consistently make it a point to educate myself on such matters."
The football spoke for itself during the tournament, bringing joy to many people.
During my time there, I had numerous conversations with members of the LGBTQ community. They shared their enjoyment of the games and expressed that it was the safest World Cup they had experienced in a long time. Being a part of this significant competition is something I take pride in.
Critics condemned Qatar for criminalizing homosexuality and committing human rights violations, raising doubts about the decision to host the tournament. Di Cunningham, co-founder of Three Lions Pride, expressed concerns about individuals accepting money to support Qatar and promote the World Cup.
"We are extremely let down by David Beckham, whom the LGBTQ+ community held in high regard as an ally, only to discover that he is an ambassador for the World Cup sponsored by the Qatari regime. This news is deeply disheartening. We hope this sends a clear message that individuals will face criticism for such choices, especially considering the community's struggles with persecution and police violence."
Beckham expressed that upon arrival, it became evident that there would be individuals discussing the matter with greater insight. He has consistently emphasized that football is a game that deserves global participation.
In his view, this presented a chance for another country and the Arab world to have the privilege of hosting one of the most significant global sporting events, the World Cup.
