Daredevil & Echo: A Ruthless Six-Minute Battle Unfolds in One Continuous Shot

Daredevil & Echo engage in a thrilling six-minute continuous shot, leaving MCU fans divided over Echo's highly anticipated action-packed scene

The upcoming MCU show, Echo directed by Sydney Freeland, has just hinted at a dramatic Daredevil-centric fight scene that is sure to captivate audiences. The show follows Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) in her hometown of Oklahoma, in a departure from the setting of the 2021 Disney+ show Hawkeye.

In Echo's five-episode run, there will be more than just a change in scenery. Maya will face off against a new adversary: Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Recently, footage of their highly anticipated confrontation was leaked online, and Sydney Freeland has now provided more details about the showdown.

Daredevil & Echo fight is a six-minute one-take

During an interview with TV Insider, Freeland talked about the clash between Echo and Daredevil, but she didn't specifically mention the Man Without Fear's participation. She did, however, mention that the fight scene was shot in a single take to convey the evolution of Echo's character with each punch she delivers.

Freeland explained, "It's a single take, lasting six minutes, and the story takes priority. Maya Lopez begins the scene as a teenage girl, but she exits as a cold-blooded killer. It was crucial for me that the audience witnesses that transformation in real-time."

In the interview, the director also discussed Echo's inclusion of MCU heavyweights like Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin. According to Freeland, these familiar characters will satisfy long-time Marvel fans without alienating more casual followers of the franchise.

MCU fans are split on Echo’s most anticipated action scene

"Our series features several cameos, and fans of the MCU will spot characters from other films and shows that they'll recognize," she clarified. "However, you don't need to have prior knowledge to enjoy this. People unfamiliar with the MCU can still watch and enjoy this."

Although Freeland’s comments indicate that Daredevil’s participation in Echo will be impressive, some fans remain skeptical about whether Matt Murdock’s comeback will meet expectations. These doubts emerged on X (formerly Twitter) following the online leak of the Echo/Daredevil fight.

A common complaint among those who were critical of the action scene was the perceived poor quality of its choreography, with at least one detractor calling it “horrible.” Despite this, the superhero fisticuffs in Echo also managed to win over many fans, with one individual commending Freeland for not resorting to “shaky cam or cuts.”

All five episodes of Echo premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on January 9. For all the latest Echo content, check out Dexerto’s full coverage here.

Editor's P/S

As a Gen Z fan, I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming MCU show, Echo, and the highly publicized Daredevil-centric fight scene. The prospect of a six-minute continuous shot that showcases Echo's transformation from a teenage girl to a cold-blooded killer is particularly intriguing. Sydney Freeland's commitment to capturing this evolution in real-time adds a layer of intensity and authenticity to the scene.

However, I can understand the skepticism expressed by some fans regarding the leaked footage of the Echo/Daredevil fight. The concerns about the choreography and the potential use of shaky cam or cuts are valid. As a fan of well-executed action sequences, I hope that the final cut of the scene addresses these issues and delivers a visually stunning and engaging fight that lives up to the expectations of Daredevil and Echo fans.
