Danny McBride enlightened his friends Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes about the intricate drama that engulfs Vanderpump Rules.

McBride, 46, expressed his excitement about the current season during his appearance on the "Smartless" podcast hosted by Bateman, 54, Arnett, and Hayes, both 53. After taking a break from watching the show, he became intrigued when he heard about a scandalous affair and decided to tune back in to see what the Vanderpumps were up to. When Arnett admitted that he hadn't seen a single episode, McBride used his expertise to explain how the show earned its name.

McBride explained that Lisa Vanderpump is the owner of the restaurant where they all work, referring to SUR, where the cast is introduced in season 1. He prefers to refer to it in the plural form because he finds it more enjoyable. McBride added that his love for Pump Rules, a show he believes is currently very popular, stems from his desire to only engage with reality TV and not commit to anything further.

Bateman shared that he occasionally watches Pump Rules and commended the show for understanding its audience. He expressed his appreciation for the way reality shows are produced nowadays, stating that they are executed excellently. He praised their ability to figure out a successful format and their willingness to experiment with it. McBride and Hayes joined in the admiration, referring to shows like Jersey Shore and Pump Rules as popular conversation topics. Meanwhile, Arnett expressed some reservations about reality TV.

"I find it peculiar. I have some acquaintance with [Bravo executive] Andy Cohen and have seen a few snippets. It seems that something shocking happened on Vanderpump recently that completely shocked everyone. There was some kind of affair and it became a big deal," he recounted. "The strange part is how they talk about each other as if they were fictional characters. It's quite confusing, like, 'What on earth are we even talking about? What is going on?"

The scandal involving Sandoval, which Arnett alluded to, gained notoriety in March when it was confirmed that Ariana Madix ended her relationship with Tom Sandoval after discovering his months-long affair with co-star Raquel Leviss. The ensuing drama unfolded on the season 10 finale, which aired in May, and the subsequent three-part reunion.

Earlier this month, the series received its first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program and Outstanding Picture Editing.

The breakdown of Madix and Sandoval's relationship in Pump Rules was based on real life, but Bateman questioned the authenticity of the conflicts in the show. He wondered if the cast fights the instinct to cause trouble for the sake of good drama. McBride suggested that everyone involved is likely competing for attention and trying to make a memorable impact on the show, jokingly referring to it as becoming the most exciting trainwreck.
