Toby Keith will receive a posthumous honor.
The late country music star, who died in February at age 62 from complications of stomach cancer, will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Being elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame is a great achievement in the world of country music. Every year, new members are chosen by a group of industry leaders selected by the Country Music Association (CMA). This honor is considered the highest in country music.
In the latest announcement, it was revealed that singer John Anderson and guitarist James Burton will be joining the prestigious ranks of the Hall of Fame.
Rolling Stone recently reported that Sarah Trahern, CEO of CMA, revealed the new inductees at a press conference in the Hall of Fame’s Rotunda on Monday morning. She discussed the nomination process and mentioned that Keith had unfortunately passed away before he could receive the exciting news.
Trahern shared, "My heart sank that Tuesday afternoon, knowing that we had missed the chance to inform Toby while he was still with us. But I have no doubt that he is smiling down on us, knowing that he will always be 'as good as he once was,'" in reference to Keith’s song, “As Good As I Once Was.”
Keith is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He shared his battle with stomach cancer in 2022, after first being diagnosed in October 2021.
He mentioned in a statement that he had undergone six months of chemo, radiation, and surgery, and so far, things were looking good. He expressed his need for some time to rest, recuperate, and unwind. He also mentioned his excitement about spending quality time with his family, but reassured fans that he would be back to see them soon.
Despite his battle with cancer, he continued to perform, even holding shows in Las Vegas until he eventually succumbed to the disease.
The new members-elect will be inducted during this year’s Country Music Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony on October 20.
