Controversy Erupts as Overwatch 2 Removes Fan-Favorite Map

Blizzard has removed the Antarctic Peninsula map from Overwatch 2 temporarily due to performance issues with certain heroes on the map

Due to performance issues with certain heroes, Overwatch 2 has temporarily removed Antarctic Peninsula from all modes. Season 5 of the game commenced two days ago and introduced new fantasy-themed cosmetics, challenges, and the returning "On Fire" mechanic. Along with this, the latest update has brought balance changes to heroes like Cassidy, Roadhog, Hanzo, and Junker Queen.

Blizzard has also announced that the long-awaited story content will be added to Overwatch 2 this summer, allowing players to team up with friends and complete these narrative missions. However, it has been confirmed that the new story content won't be free to play when the Season 6 update launches on August 10. Overwatch 2 players will have to purchase a $15 bundle to gain permanent access to the new story content, which will also include a Sojourn legendary skin, 1,000 Overwatch coins, and access to Sojourn in PvP modes.

Blizzard has acknowledged a list of ongoing issues that are currently affecting Overwatch 2. One of the most notable issues is the disabling of Antarctic Peninsula due to performance problems caused by certain heroes on this map. The culprit is believed to be Mercy, who had been exploiting a bug that allowed players to use both her pistol and staff at the same time on the Paraiso map. This exploit had caused unbearable performance issues for everyone else in the lobby, making it a game-breaking problem. As a result, the developers have removed the Paraiso map from all modes to prevent a few Mercy players from ruining other people's games.

Controversy Erupts as Overwatch 2 Removes Fan-Favorite Map

The Antarctic Peninsula is an exciting control map in Overwatch 2 that boasts unique features such as an underground drilling station, an icebreaker ship, and a large research station. Additionally, players can catch a glimpse of the native inhabitants of the Antarctic Circle, including penguins and fish. On the other hand, Paraiso is a dynamic hybrid map set in the stunning city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Players must escort a parade float through the city's vibrant suburbs and be prepared for close-range combat. While the performance issues with these maps are currently unclear, the developers are working hard to address them as soon as possible. They are also investigating bugs affecting the Team Radio feature and Kiriko's Swift Step, as well as an issue with some players not receiving their competitive titles from Overwatch 2 Season 4.

Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
