Fans of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies are accusing Paramount+ of completely removing the series from its streaming platform. The show, which served as a musical prequel to Grease and focused on the formation of the Pink Ladies girl gang, featured a collection of over two dozen original songs. Along with three other shows, it was taken down last month, a mere three weeks after the season 1 finale aired.
The nominations for the 2023 Emmys have been released, and Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies has received two nods for Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming. In response to this recognition from the industry, devoted fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment with Paramount+ for eliminating the series. Here are some select responses from these fans:
Mark, a Twitter user, criticized the streamer and urged them to reverse the cancellation promptly.
In a plea to #SaveOurPinks, Amanda DeRemer highlighted the show's Emmy nominations and also mentioned its nomination for a Hollywood Critics Association award. She further emphasized that the show's album is currently ranking on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
Meanwhile, Matt Merchant jokingly pondered, "Perhaps I should give it a look! Hold on..."
Jair Hilburn expressed concerns over streamers, stating that this incident "sheds light on the numerous hazards they pose," explaining that "even when the content isn't available on the platform for monetary reasons, studios can still gain advantages." User @#LATINOS4ITZY further accentuated the absurdity of nominating a show that is "'non-existent' for tax purposes," whereas @NateDaShockkker asserted, "The person responsible for approving the removal should be dismissed from their position."
Some, like Benvi Brainrot, have gone to the extent of terminating their Paramount+ subscriptions. Brainrot remarks, "Imagine witnessing the very show you withdrew from being recognized with an EMMY nomination. You all display such foolishness for making that choice."
Is There a Future for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Anywhere?
Since the removal of Rise of the Pink Ladies, fans have been ardently advocating for its revival or, at the very least, its reintegration into the streaming platform. A series of Emmy nominations could prove to have a significant impact on the show's fate, possibly outweighing the influence of the Change.org petition, which has already garnered over 40,000 signatures.
In the past, awards have effectively promoted lesser-known series that excel in specific areas. Although the series was taken down due to tax reasons, it could be beneficial to reintroduce it on the streaming platform, as it would attract more viewers due to its award recognition. If the series were to win an Emmy, the excitement surrounding it would likely increase significantly. However, even if it is not reinstated, the chances of a Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies season 2 are highly unlikely.
If the decision is made not to bring back the show on the streaming platform, it is improbable that Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will have a future on any other streaming network. Other platforms are also removing content in large quantities, and it is unlikely that they would want to acquire a series that has already been deemed unprofitable. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of a physical media or video-on-demand release, especially considering that at least five out of the ten episodes have already been prepared for distribution under the "For Your Consideration" category.
