Annabel Oakes, the creator of Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, has responded to Paramount+'s decision to cancel the show and remove it from their service. Oakes took to her Instagram story to express her devastation over the cancellation and the plan to remove the show entirely. She also thanked the fans for their support and invited them to watch the show before it's no longer available.
Paramount+'s Cancellations Continue A Worrying Industry Trend
Paramount+ shocked the streaming industry by not only removing their content from their platforms but also being written off as part of their "cost-cutting measures". In late 2022, a significant number of movies and shows, such as Minx, The Witches, and The Nevers, were removed from the then-named HBO Max. Disney+ followed suit in May 2023, canceling and removing highly marketed shows like Willow, Diary of a Future President, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum from their series.
The services have managed to avoid paying the studios and creators of the series by not hosting them on their own platforms. Although these projects may eventually find a new home and be renewed for additional seasons, as demonstrated by Paramount+ shopping around their recently canceled show and certain HBO titles being hosted by Netflix, the decisions have received negative feedback from both creators and audiences. They are concerned that the shows they love and the ones they have worked on may become legally inaccessible in order to save costs. While Paramount+'s attempt to find alternative platforms for their shows offers some hope, the recent wave of cancellations and removals is still disheartening to witness. It is a devastating prospect for both creators like Annabel Oakes, the writer of "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies," and fans of these shows to potentially lose access to these works indefinitely. As Paramount+ waits to gauge the impact on their financials, this string of cancellations raises doubts about the future of streaming among audiences.
