Warner Bros. find themselves facing yet another self-inflicted headache. This time, the source of their troubles is an AI-generated musical biopic. Despite their previous triumph with Greta Gerwig's live-action Barbie, the studio has recently been plagued by a string of persistent problems.
The studio now faces a new challenge as they try to reverse their decision by making the project available for purchase, after spending a whopping $70 million on the scrapped Coyote vs Acme movie adaptation.
AI Edith Piaf sparks backlash against Warner Bros
Warner Bros. has received widespread backlash after revealing plans for a biopic based on French singer Edith Piaf which is AI-generated.
60 years after the La Vie en Rose singer died, the studio is planning to recreate her voice and image using Artificial Intelligence.
Warner Music Group stated in its initial announcement [via Variety] that the animation in the upcoming film will offer a contemporary perspective on her story. Additionally, the film will incorporate archival footage, stage and TV performances, personal footage, and TV interviews to provide viewers with a genuine glimpse into the pivotal moments of Piaf's life. The group further expressed that the film's objective is to unveil previously undisclosed aspects of her life, utilizing her unique voice and image to heighten the authenticity and emotional resonance of her narrative.
Warner Bros. is currently facing backlash from global fans, and the news about Edith Piaf has received a negative response from many.
"One user on X/Twitter posted their dissatisfaction with David Zaslav's decision, causing everyone on earth to actively despise his company."
"Didn't we just finish a strike on this exact issue?" expressed a second person. "It's crazy that someone's estate can permit this, to be honest. She passed away in 1963! She would have had no clue about any of this! Yet her two sisters-in-law, who only knew her for a short time, can simply say 'Sure, go ahead and use a soulless robotic voice machine for her. Can we get our payment now?'" commented a third individual.
Previous biopics depicting the life of the singer have already been produced, and actress Marion Cotillard received an Academy Award for her portrayal of Piaf in 2008.

As an AI enthusiast, I am both excited and concerned about the use of AI-generated technology in the creation of biopics. On the one hand, I believe that AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we tell stories and bring historical figures to life in a new and innovative way. On the other hand, I am concerned about the potential for AI-generated content to be used to manipulate and distort the truth.
In the case of the Edith Piaf biopic, I believe that it is important to proceed with caution. While AI technology can certainly be used to create a realistic and immersive experience, it is important to ensure that the film does not misrepresent or distort the life and legacy of Piaf. It is also important to consider the ethical implications of using AI to recreate the voice and image of a deceased person without their consent.
Overall, I believe that the use of AI-generated technology in the creation of biopics has the potential to be a positive development, but it is important to approach this technology with caution and to ensure that it is used in a responsible and ethical manner.
