Christopher Nolan remarked on the state of the movie industry, noting that Hollywood thrives when it releases both big-budget sequels and smaller-scale projects simultaneously. Speaking to the Associated Press, he discussed the delicate balance in Hollywood.
"Hollywood has always been about finding a balance between established titles that guarantee a profit and meeting audience demand," Nolan explained. "This model has traditionally funded the production and distribution of a wide variety of films."
"There always has to be a respect for the audience's desire for something new. That's one of the big thrills of going to the movies, frankly; seeing a trailer for a movie you've never heard of or a type of movie you haven't seen or haven't seen in a long time," he added. "Something new. Something fresh. So a healthy ecosystem in Hollywood is about a balance between the two things, and always has been."
Nolan has been creating films for decades. He began his career with lower-budget movies like Memento, Insomnia, and The Prestige, before achieving a new level of fame (and budget) with his Batman trilogy and later films such as Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and most recently, Oppenheimer. Notably, Oppenheimer is Nolan's most commercially successful non-Batman movie of all time.
Oppenheimer earned over $950 million worldwide at the box office and continues to generate revenue through its home video release. The film is currently available for purchase at $20 from various digital retailers, but is not yet available for streaming. The expectation is that Oppenheimer will first be streamed on Peacock, given its distribution by Universal.
While Nolan has plans for future projects, the specific details of his next directorial endeavor are not known. However, it has been confirmed that it will not be the next James Bond movie, as Nolan has already stated that he will not be involved.
