The landscape of One Chicago is shifting once more as the showrunners of Chicago Med, Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov, have revealed their departure.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, April 9, via The Hollywood Reporter, Frolov and Schneider expressed their gratitude for being selected by Dick Wolf to lead Chicago Med. They also mentioned how much they have cherished working with Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television.

The pair expressed their love for Chicago Med and shared that after nine seasons, they believe it's time to seek out new opportunities. They have poured their creative energy into the show and are grateful for the chance to work with a talented writing staff, production team, and amazing cast of actors whom they will miss.

The married couple have been co-showrunners of Med since it began in 2015. As the series is currently in its ninth season, they have decided that this will be their final season at the helm. NBC has not yet announced who will take over their roles.

We are thankful to Diane and Andy for their incredible work on Chicago Med," said Wolf, 77, in a statement on Tuesday. They played a key role in making the show a top-rated hit on NBC for almost ten years.

Chicago Med is part of Wolf's One Chicago series, following the success of Chicago Fire, which debuted in 2012 and is now in its twelfth season. Chicago P.D. joined the franchise two years later and is currently airing its eleventh season.

Since its premiere in 2015, Med has contributed to the growth of One Chicago, attracting an average of 10.5 million viewers across all platforms, as reported by THR.

Although the departures of Frolov and Schneider may come as a surprise to some fans, it is not the first time a major change has occurred within one of the series.

Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas recently shared that he will be leaving the show after a decade in November 2022. He also mentioned his departure from another Wolf Entertainment project, FBI: International, by the end of its current season.

Haas shared with Variety that he gained valuable knowledge about storytelling, character development, production quality, and assembling top-notch teams from Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski. Despite the difficulty of leaving a place he cherished for more than ten years, which included strong backing from Universal Television, NBC, and CBS, Haas expressed excitement about creating his own mark in the entertainment industry.

Haas’ departure had a ripple effect on the three franchises in the following year. Chicago Fire’s Taylor Kinney, known for his role as Kelly Severide, took a break in January 2023 for personal reasons but has now come back to the show.

In May, Nick Gehlfuss bid farewell to Chicago Med after portraying Dr. Will Halstead throughout the series. Then, in October 2023, Tracy Spiridakos revealed that season 11 of Chicago P.D., which premiered in January, would be her final season.

In the following month, it was announced that Kara Killmer would be leaving Chicago Fire in the upcoming season 12. Fans said goodbye to her character, Sylvie Brett, in a February episode.

Similarly, Alberto Rosende, known for his role as firefighter Blake Gallo, was written out of the show at the beginning of season 12.

Chicago Med airs on NBC Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
