Cher Opens up About Backing Out on Writing Her Memoir, Vows to Gather Courage and Proceed

Cher admits backing out of writing her memoir, revealing her initial plans from 2017 She now acknowledges the need to gather courage and man up to fulfill her commitment

Cher, 77, admitted to feeling hesitant about including certain details of her life in her upcoming memoir. She also expressed that she is still finding it difficult to confront certain aspects of her past, but acknowledged the need to do so in order to create a more honest and complete story.

Upon completion, the singer remarked that the book will be a substantial read, noting, "I’ve lived too long and done too much and so it’s like it should be the encyclopedia." She then joked with the audience, "Not that you guys know what that is."

When Cher revealed she hadn't chosen a title for the book, host Jimmy Fallon playfully offered some suggestions, such as I Got Scoops, Babe and Over-Cher-Ing, but Cher shook her head "no" as the audience groaned.

Cher initially revealed her intention to write a memoir in 2017. In an update to The Hollywood Reporter in August, she mentioned that she is nearing completion of the book, crediting her publishing company for pushing her to make progress. "Well, we're almost finished because [HarperCollins] goes, 'Cher, how long are you going to work on this?'" she said. "That's difficult too, but we're so close."

The Grammy winner has plenty of other projects in the pipeline. She wowed the crowd at the 2023 Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade on Thursday, performing her festive favorite "DJ Play a Christmas Song" from her latest album, Christmas.

Cher had a photo session in June 1981 in Los Angeles, California. In an interview with Fallon, she confessed that it took her some time to make her Christmas album. Cher explained that she struggled to find herself in a Christmas album but ultimately recorded most of it in her own house, selecting songs that didn't necessarily go together, but when combined, worked really well.

We also had to ask iconic musicians Darlene Love and Stevie Wonder to contribute their voices to a few tracks. "I was really nervous, I'm not joking," Cher admitted when she called 73-year-old Wonder and realized that some parts of "What Christmas Means to Me" were "just Stevie." Cher announced in September that she was releasing her first Christmas album and discussed the album's creation during an appearance on Good Morning Britain the following month.

"It's a Christmas album by Cher, but it's not the traditional holiday album your mother would listen to," she said at the time. The decision to include more voices, such as Wonder, Love, Michael Bublé, Cyndi Lauper, and Tyga, was a last-minute addition.

"I've never done duets before," she pointed out. "I've never had other artists on any of my albums. But they're all special."
