In the early stages of Game of Thrones, Lord Eddard Stark, the Hand of the King, uncovered the truth that Jaime Lannister was the father of Queen Cersei's children. Instead of consulting with his absent friend, King Robert I Baratheon, Ned naively confronted Cersei in a secluded courtyard of the Red Keep. "I know what Jon Arryn (the former Hand) died for," Ned declared.
Cersei boldly confirmed her relationship with Jaime, stating, "The Targaryens have kept their bloodlines pure by marrying siblings for three hundred years. Jaime and I are more than just brother and sister. We shared a womb and entered this world together. We are meant to be together." When Ned urged her to escape Robert's persecution with their children, Cersei delivered what is arguably the most iconic line in all of Game of Thrones, "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground."
In Game of Thrones season 1, episode 7, titled "You Win or You Die," there is a memorable dialogue between Ned and Cersei. This episode features epic staging and exceptional performances by the Thrones cast. Cersei, aware of Ned's lack of practicality, reminisces about Jaime's account of the fateful day when King's Landing fell. After Robert killed Aerys' heir, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen at the Trident, Jaime, who was a member of the Kingsguard, advised the king to bar the gates of the capital and prevent Tywin Lannister and his army from entering. Unfortunately, at the counsel of Grand Maester Pycelle, Lord Lannister and his army were allowed in, leading to the sacking of the city.
Ned Found Jaime Lannister On The Iron Throne
Aerys, still defiant in his refusal to surrender, commanded Lord Rossart to execute his sinister plan involving the use of wildfire. The deranged ruler intended to set ablaze the entire capital, concealing caches of the volatile substance at various locations throughout the city. These included not only the esteemed Great Sept of Baelor and the poverty-stricken slums of Flea Bottom, but also private residences, stables, taverns, and even the depths beneath the Red Keep itself. In a monumental act of betrayal, Jaime forsaked his solemn oath to protect and chose to end the life of the very man he had sworn to defend. Shortly thereafter, Ned and Jaime unexpectedly found themselves in a confrontation within the confines of the throne room, leaving speculation as to what transpired during their encounter and prompting Cersei to criticize Ned for naively attempting to navigate the treacherous power dynamics of the game of thrones. While attempting to escape, Jaime took decisive action by ending the Mad King's life with a slash to his throat. This courageous act was necessary to protect the city, although it resulted in Jaime being labeled the "Kingslayer." Later, when Ned arrived in the throne room, he discovered Jaime seated on the throne with his golden sword resting on his legs. Demonstrating his loyalty to Robert, Jaime willingly relinquished the seat to Ned. Understanding the impending danger, Jaime covertly eliminated the two pyromancers, Belis and Garigus, thereby thwarting Aerys' plan involving wildfire. These significant events from the Game of Thrones universe highlight Cersei's ominous words to Ned, which ultimately led to her plotting against him.
"You should have claimed the throne for yourself. Jaime informed me about the day when King's Landing fell. He was seated on the Iron Throne, but you forced him to relinquish it. It would have been simple for you to ascend those steps and take your place as ruler."
Cersei's Machinations
Ned's fate was sealed when he disclosed Cersei's children's parentage. Surrounded by treacherous individuals like Petyr Baelish, who falsely assured him of the City Watch's support, Ned's hopes to honor Robert's will were shattered. Joffrey, self-proclaimed king, summoned Ned to the throne room, demanding his allegiance and coronation arrangements. Disregarding Joffrey's commands, Ned presented an unbroken seal of Robert's will to Ser Barristan Selmy.
Cersei ripped the letter apart, demanding Ned's submission or facing their wrath. Believing that the City Watch and its commander, Janos Slynt, were under his control, Ned ordered the Watch to apprehend Cersei and her children. However, they were loyal to the Lannisters, betraying Ned and massacring his allies in the throne room. Lord Baelish, with a dagger to Ned's throat, remarked, "I warned you not to trust me." In this pivotal episode of Game of Thrones, Cersei emerged victorious, skillfully playing her role and proving that those who sought a middle ground in their pursuit of power ultimately sealed their own fates.
