Almost ten years after breaking off his engagement to Caroline Wozniacki over the phone, Rory McIlroy finds himself in the spotlight again. This time, it's because of his divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll.

McIlroy, who is now 35 years old, officially filed for divorce from Stoll after seven years of marriage. In his filing on Monday, May 13, he cited that their relationship was "irretrievably broken."

After the breakup, a source told We that McIlroy’s ex-fiancée Wozniacki, aged 33, does not want to be involved in his problems.

Wozniacki, a former top-ranked tennis player, and McIlroy, currently ranked as the world's No. 2 professional golfer, became engaged on New Year's Eve in 2013. Unfortunately, their engagement ended less than five months later when McIlroy decided to call off the relationship just after they had sent out wedding invitations.

"Caroline had always dreamed of a peaceful home and family life. She wanted to live quietly with her loved ones. Rory was the final disappointment for her in terms of relationships," a source shared.

According to the insider, Rory did not fit the description of the kind of partner Caroline was looking for.

Wozniacki married former NBA All-Star David Lee in June 2019 and the couple share daughter Olivia, 2, and son James, 18 months.

McIlroy himself admitted that there is no easy way to end a relationship that was significant to both of them. He mentioned that the issue was his own, realizing he wasn't prepared for the commitment of marriage after receiving wedding invitations over the weekend.

The statement said that Caroline deserves happiness and thanked her for the good times they shared. The person also mentioned that they will not talk about their relationship anymore.

Later, it was revealed in The New York Times that McIlroy ended the relationship over a quick phone call, a decision Wozniacki confirmed.

In a September 2014 interview on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, she expressed her shock at the way things ended. She expected a face-to-face conversation, but instead, he ended things with a phone call and then disappeared. It was tough for her, especially since he made their breakup so public right from the beginning, putting out press releases and making it impossible for her to avoid.

After being away from tennis for more than two and a half years, Wozniacki made a comeback in August 2023. She had some impressive performances, reaching the Round of 16 at the US Open and making it to the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open in March 2024.

Editor's P/S:

Rory McIlroy's recent divorce has rekindled memories of his tumultuous relationship with Caroline Wozniacki. McIlroy's decision to end their engagement over a phone call caused significant pain for Wozniacki, who had dreamed of a stable family life. While she has since moved on and found happiness with David Lee, friends believe McIlroy's recent breakup is a karmic consequence for his past actions.

McIlroy's admission that he wasn't ready for the commitment of marriage raises questions about his maturity and readiness for a long-term relationship. It's unfortunate that Wozniacki had to endure such a public and abrupt end to their engagement, and it's understandable why she has chosen to distance herself from McIlroy's current situation. The contrast between Wozniacki's current contentment and McIlroy's marital difficulties highlights the importance of emotional maturity and compatibility in relationships.
